The Gospel Music Festival of Chicago will put on a weekend of inspirational music at Millennium Park on the lakefront for two days, June 6-7, 2009. Gospel fans congregate at the park for entertainment at the Walgreen’s Day Stage and Pritzker Pavilion for the excitement of spiritual music, the fresh spring air and to socialize with music fans.
The Annual Gospel Music Festival of Chicago returns for their 25th annual show on June 6 and 7 and Millennium Park. The lakefront will be filed with the harmonies of the distinctive music style that brings joy to so many people. The 2009 festival will be headlined by Kirk Franklin and Donnie McClurkin. Fantasia, featuring Diane Barrino, will be making special appearance.
The Gospel Music Festival is a free event sponsored by the City of Chicago. The festival showcases the diverse musical heritage of Chicago. This year’s talent line up will include local, national and international gospel music.
The Gospel Music Festival attracts a large crowd. The two day festival begins at 11:00 am and lasts through 9:30 pm both days.
Donnie McClurkin will perform on Saturday, June 6. McClurkin will perform songs with heartfelt lyrics from his recent album “We Are One (Live in Detroit). McClurkin has been awarded two Stellar awards and a Dove nomination. He has also performed at the White House and on the Oprah Winfrey Show.
Earlier in the day, performers at Pritzker Pavilion will include The Acme Missionary Baptist Church Choir, Shekinah Glory Ministry and Jonathan Nelson, Rodrick Dixon, The Chicago Mass Choir and the Divine Divas. The Quartet Special features Doc Mckenzie and the Hi-lites and Le Williams and The Spiritual QC’s.
Kirk Franklin will close the festival on Sunday, June 7. Franklin is a five time Grammy winner and a multi-platinum artist. His latest release is The Fight of My Life, called one of the most dynamic of his gospel career.
Before Franklin takes the stage, the winner of 2004 American Idol, Fantasia, will wow people in the audience. Fantasia will perform with her mother, Diane Barrino; showcasing their families gospel roots. Fantasia’s debut album, I Believe, made Billboard Hot 100 Chart history. Fantasia has most recently appearing the Oprah Winfrey’s The Color Purple.
On June 7 the Pritzker Stage will be opened by Dr. Charles Hayes and the Cosmopolitan Church of Prayer Choir.
Walgreen’s Day Stage
On Saturday June 6; performers on the Walgreen’s Day Stage include Alfred heeler & Blessed, Ebone, Maurice Griffin, The Celestials, Felicia Welch & Friends, New Orleans Heritage Festival Artists – The Williams Group, The James’ and Lady La Varnga Hubbard.
On Sunday, June 7; the Walgreens Day Stages presents “Sunday Quartet Special” featuring Evelyn Turrentine Agee, The Mighty Bells of Joy, The Gospel Crusaders, The Genesis Travelers, The Christian Singers, Doc McKenzie and the Hi-LItes and Lee Williams & the Spiritual QC’s.
The Gospel Music Festival of Chicago attracts a large crowd. The Mayor’s Office of Special Events recommends public transportation to avoid traffic congestion.
