Last night (March 2, 2009) the last group of 12 competing for a spot in the top twelve of American Idol’s Season 8 performed.
There were three groups of twelve that competed. Out of each group 3 are chosen by the American voters to go on to the top twelve. The additional 3 positions will be taken by 3 wild card contestants that will be chosen by the judges this Thursday. Some contestants who did not make out of their initial groups will come back to compete once again for those last 3 spots.
For me last night’s competition had me wondering which 3 would make it through. As there were 4 performances last night worthy of the top 12 and one more who came quite close and might grab some votes because he has been a beloved competitor and was highlighted quite a bit in the previous Hollywood week shows.
In order of appearance here are my top 4 choices to make it through on tonight’s American Idol:
1. Von Smith: Last night Von sang, “You are all I need to get by.” Von who is a bit of a You Tube celebrity and has a very loud and proud voice that came across as shouting to judges in Hollywood week. Last night he brought the volume down and had a subtle but solid performance. Towards the end of the song he showed off his wide vocal range. Von went first last night which is sometimes the kiss of death for contestants as they may be forgotten after viewers view the other performances. That would be a shame as I believe Von could be a solid competitor in the competition. What may be Von’s saving grace is his Youtube fan base, who will likely vote for him.
2. Felicia Barton: Felicia Barton sang, “No One” by Alicia Keys last night which is a challenging song. She did really well at singing this song and came out strong. Simon said what I knew he would say, and that was basically that she did well but that the performance was a bit of a copy cat. That being said anyone who can sing like Alicia deserves a little respect, at least in my mind. This girl is a total package. Not only does she have a great voice but she is also very pretty.
3. Jorge Nunez: Although the judges feared that this Portirico Native’s strong accent may make it difficult for him to enunciate the American songs. But he not only proved that he could enunciate properly but that he could also really sing. He sang, “Don’t Let The Sun Go Down on Me” by Elton John. He was subtle in all the right places and strong when the song demanded it. This man has a beautiful voice.
4. Lil Rounds: From the moment this lady opened her mouth I knew she could sing. She sang,” Be Without You,” which may have been a risky song for most contestants and would have been too big for most singers but no so for Lil Rounds. She sang the song with amazing confidence and performed like she was born on the stage singing. Simon had nothing negative at all to say to her. In fact he had just one word, “Brilliant!” Today on the view they touted Lil as the future winner of Season 8’s American Idol.
Scott Macintyre who got a lot of camera time during Hollywood week came in pretty strong, and he has endeared himself to the American public so he may capture some extra votes from the American Public as well. I wouldn’t mind seeing him in the wild card round, but the 4 above are the ones to beet based on last night’s competition. There were also a couple of other competitors last night that I would love to see perform again because I just think they chose the wrong songs. So we shall see if they end up in the wild card round as well.
So last night competition was a stiff one. One of the people that I thought were excellent will not make it to the top twelve tonight; possibly even two of them. My only hope is that all 4 of them make it in by way of wild card. Of course with only 12 spots not everyone who deserves to be in top 12 will make it.
Tonight’s results show will certainly be an interesting one. I am also very interested to see who will make it in to the wild card round.
