Are you wondering if orthodontics are really worth the cost, time and effort? Did your child inherit your crooked teeth, severe overbite (or underbite) and you’re not sure if you should go into debt paying for orthodontic work? Are you trying to decide between paying for braces and paying for college? Here are seven reasons why, if your child needs them, you should pay for orthodontic work for your youngster or teen.
Reason Why Your Child Should Get Braces #1: Orthodontics Will Prevent Tooth Decay and Problems Later in Life
If teeth are crooked, it makes them harder to brush and floss properly. Therefore, statistically your child will have more cavities and need dental work such as root canals because they are more difficult to clean. It’s possible they could have gingivitis and end up with a nice set of dentures by the time their 50, possibly younger. When you consider how much treating cavities, root canals, etc costs, braces are worth it financially just for that reason.
Reason Why Your Child Should Get Braces #2: Your Child May Live Longer
Yes, believe it or not, fixing misaligned teeth can lengthen your child’s life! People who have braces as a child or teen have a lower incidence of cardiovascular (heart) disease – which, of course, will shorten your child’s life. Read this article for more details on the link between gum disease (which can result from bacteria lodged in crooked teeth) and cardiovascular disease.
Reason Why Your Child Should Get Braces #3: Your Child May Be Able To Breathe Better
This is especially true as your child gets older. Because the roof of the mouth can block the airway, he/she may develop breathing problems. This can lead to poor sleeping and other problems. Of course, this isn’t the case in all types of crooked teeth, but it is the case in some.
Reason Why Your Child Should Get Braces #4: Your Child Will Be More Confident, Have a Better Self-Esteem, and Fell Better About Their Appearance
Having straight, attractive teeth will help your child feel more confident in him or herself. This could (possibly) lessen the chances of depression. He/she will feel better about his/her image and be more motivated to succeed in life.
Reason Why Your Child Should Get Braces #5: He/She Will Have a Better Chance At Landing a Good Job
Okay, this one is more of a theory that I have. I don’t know of any studies showing where someone with crooked teeth was less likely to be hired. However, just think about it. If you were hiring someone who was working with clients (or even if they weren’t) and you had to choose between someone with good teeth and someone with horrible teeth, who would you choose?
Years ago, a news magazine show (it was either Dateline or 20/20) did a show demonstrating how pretty, attractive people were more likely to be offered jobs that those who were not attractive. I believe that having an excellent smile makes someone more attractive. It is possible they could be offered a higher salary as well.
If you thinking about it, maybe they could afford a nicer nursing home if you get your child’s crooked teeth and/or poor bite corrected.
Reason Why Your Child Should Get Braces #6: Your Child Will be more Likely to Find a Good Spouse
Okay, I also don’t know of any studies linking crooked teeth to lack of dating, however, common sense tells you that a nice smile is a plus when you’re on the dating market. Who knows, because your child has his/her teeth fixed, he/she may be more likely to get married and then bless you with grandchildren. (Okay, that’s a little far-fetched, but braces do significantly improve the appearance of anyone.)
Reason Why Your Child Should Get Braces #7: Your Child Will Have a Beautiful, Glowing Smile
I know this one is obvious, but the article wouldn’t be complete if I didn’t mention it. Your child should have braces so he/she will have a gorgeous smile that he/she (and you) will be proud of. Even if you need to take out a loan, and skip a few vacations, home remodeling, and going out to eat for the next 10 years, braces are worth it for physical and psychological benefits.
If you are reading this, and thinking that there’s no way you could afford braces – remember you can get credit on programs such as Care Credit.. Braces (and the newer invisalign system) are worth their weight in gold!
