Discovery Channel has many excellent shows and The Alaska Experiment is no exception. The Alaska Experiment was first on Discovery Channel in April 2008. Soon after The Alaska Experiment aired it became a hit for many loyal audience members.
The Alaska Experiment is a reality show in which 10 volunteers try to spend 3 months in the Alaskan wilderness. You watch as the four groups of people gather wood, find food and try to survive. The Alaska Experiment is similar to other Discovery Channel shows in the fact that it focuses on the environment and nature rather than just the people. There were several episodes followed by a reunion show in which we got to see how the cast was doing after they returned home.
This show got viewers hooked right from the beginning. We watched as the four groups got flown by plane and dropped off in Alaska. The groups then had to follow a map to find their homes for the next three months. Many groups were in for a big surprise when they found just getting to their home was a big challenge. Three of the groups had small cabins with no electricity and no running water. The fourth couple had a canvas sided cabin. The show got interesting right away as the groups started to make their homes in the wilderness.
During the course of the episodes the volunteers had to spend time preparing for winter in Alaska. They had to gather wood to make sure they could keep a fire going and stay warm. The groups also had to gather food that would last them through the winter. Many teams spent a lot of time fishing, while other groups got a chance to try hunting goats. One couple was devastated when they spent all their time fishing and canning what they caught only to find out they canned it wrong, and it was rotten.
During their time in Alaska the volunteers had to deal with wildlife. Most groups were worried about the presence of bears. Fortunately all the groups were able to stay away from the wild animals, and keep their cabin safe. There were also a lot of entertaining moments when cabin fever began to set in. Being all alone in the wilderness made people act crazy sometimes. One couple was convinced there was a person walking around their camp at night. The Wise family spent a lot of the time arguing with each other about everything, including where to set their boots. The group of friends thought they heard another one of the groups singing, even though they were nowhere near them.
The Alaska Experiment was a very entertaining show that many different people would like. If you like reality shows like Survivor, you would like this show. It has a similar premise to Survivor – people surviving in strange environments – but The Alaska Experiment is more realistic and has less “set up” events. If you are interested in nature or Alaska this is an excellent show to watch, it shows you parts of Alaska that the typical visitor would never see.
I think The Alaska Experiment was a very unique show that had an excellent premise. As soon as I watched one episode I was hooked, I had to know what was going to happen next. Watching The Alaska Experiment on Discovery Channel made me want to go be part of nature, maybe not as extreme as the volunteers on Alaska Experiment, but to go camping at least. I like shows that make you want to learn more. I am excitedly waiting for the next season of The Alaska Experiment. I can’t wait to see what will happen next time.
