The top 3 results show of American Idol Season 8 has left me reeling with mixed emotions. My boy Danny Gokey was sent home, and I’m saddened, but, at the same time, I’m happy for Kris Allen, whose sincerity and, dare I say it, artistry, has clearly won the hearts of millions. As for Adam Lambert, well, he was pretty much a shoo-in to make it into the finale and he is already a huge star, so what can I say? He’s already made it – and a successful career in the entertainment industry awaits him – whether he wins the American Idol crown or not.
One thing I do have to say, though, is that if you didn’t feel Danny Gokey as he sang his American Idol swan song – Billy Preston’s beautiful “You Are So Beautiful” — than I really do have to question how deep your emotions run (sorry, but I do). You know he was singing the song to his beloved late wife Sophia – who was tragically taken from this world much too soon – and it was enormously touching. And it showcased his wonderful talent to great effect.
On the other hand, Danny is edgier than Kris; he’s moodier, and I think this rubbed quite a few people the wrong way. It didn’t have that effect on me, however, because it made Danny more human to me. I can relate. I didn’t read it as arrogance or smugness, but, rather, I took it to mean that Danny is a real person with a range of complex human emotions. And this endeared him to me – as did his magnificent voice.
Let not your heart be troubled, Danny Gokey fans, for Danny’s future is bright. He will be a successful recording artist. He is one of the most beloved, memorable and talented contestants to have ever graced the stage of American Idol. Truly.
I must say that I am happy for Kris Allen, the so-called dark horse of AI season 8 who made it into the finale with the incomparable Adam Lambert. He, like Danny Gokey and Adam Lambert, is a splendid young man. I was particularly touched when the American Idol cameras caught (or staged) him and his dad embracing during Kris’s hometown visit . His dad, overcome with emotion, told Kris how proud he was of him, and how much he loved him. Quite frankly, this brought tears to my eyes. It touched me deeply. Very deeply. And as I watched this touching moment, I was thinking, Hey, I’m going to be sad if Kris is sent home tonight. Yet I didn’t want Danny to go either. You see what I mean by mixed emotions?
There’s is something special about season 8 of American Idol. There is something special about Danny Gokey, Adam Lambert and Kris Allen. They are arguably the most gifted top 3 American Idol contestants ever, and it has been a joy to watch them progress through the competition. They are all winners. They are all such magnificent gentleman.
I’m not going to make any predictions about next week; it’s just impossible to ascertain how it’s going to shake out.
But I would like to make a request. If you support Kris, don’t make Adam the object of your hatred – and vice versa. Try to restrain yourself from leaving mean-spirited comments about them on articles like this. Try to come up with something nice to say about the man who you are not rooting for. Show Kris and Adam some mad love. I urge you to do so below.
