Last night (April 29th) the American Idol audience was shocked as front runner Adam Lambert ended up in the bottom 3. Most people have already decided that Adam will win American idol this year with his amazing vocals and polished stage presence, but last night there were surprised noises all over the auditorium and even some of the judge’s mouths dropped opened when Ryan Secrest told Adam to go over and stand with the other 2 members of the bottom 3.
After a brief recap showing clips from Tuesday’s show Ryan introduced the judges. When Ryan asked Simon how he though the contestants did on Tuesday night Simon sad something to the effect of, honestly everyone was good.
Then just like every other week the car commercial showing the Idols was shown. After the cool commercial was shown the group of contestants got on the stage and performed. They sand and danced to the song, It Don’t Mean a Thing if it Ain’t Got That Swing.
After the performance and some commercials they showed a short video clip of the group at the Idol house making a cake and then having a food fight. It was a cute entertaining little video. After the video it was time to get down to business.
It was time to divide out the remaining 5 contestants in to two groups, one who was safe and one who was not. Ryan first approached Matt and sent Matt to one side of the stage, then sent Danny to the other side. At this point nobody except Ryan knew which was the good side to be on and which was the bad one. Then it was Allison’s turn to be sized up. Allison then joined Danny on his side of the stage. When Ryan called out Kris’s name several girls in the audience screamed out, and then Kris was sent to stand over by Matt on that side of the stage. When Ryan got to Adam he told Adam to look at both groups and asked him what group he thought he belonged in. Not a nice position to be in. Adam didn’t like it but he chose to stand by Allison and Danny. But Ryan soon moved him over by Matt and Kris telling everyone that it was Matt, Kris, and Adam in the bottom three. Shocking screams and boos rang out from the audience, the camera panned to the judges, and for the most part there were shocked faces sitting there.
Then it was time for the bottom three contestants to sit in their fear as Natalie Cole, Taylor Hicks, and Jamie Fox all performed. I have to imagine that as much as the contestants in the bottom three would love to enjoy the performances it has be really difficult for them to sit there not knowing their fates.
It was finally time to get down to it and Kris Allen was sent back to safety. That left Matt and Adam standing there awaiting America’s decision. In the end Adam was safe and Matt Giraud was the one who would go home.
Matt sung his final song and he did a really nice job. Paula was crying, Allison was crying, and OK, I was crying. I have been a fan of Matt all along, and it was sad to see him go. His blue eyes were all watery as he performed but he held his composure.
Why Did Adam Lambert Hit the Bottom 3 When Everyone Thinks He Will Win?
There are of course several theories out there about why Adam was in the bottom 3 last night. One theory is that the contest will be more even, and more of a competition if Adam were not there, so people didn’t vote for him in order to make things more interesting.
Another theory which is the more likely theory is that people are assuming that Adam will already win so they are not voting for him, thinking everyone else will, this has happened in past seasons of Idol.
Whatever the reason I don’t think Adam fans will let this happen again and will be sure to vote for him next week.
My Own Thoughts
I was shocked to see Adam in the bottom three. I didn’t think that would happen, but I think it did shake things up a little. I thought that Kris might end up in the bottom 3 last night just based on Tuesdays performance. Not that he was bad, but just because everyone was so good. He was good too, but his performance was just a tad less entertaining then everyone else’s. But Kris has been very consistent and I was confident that he would not go home. I thought that since everyone was really good on Tuesday that the bottom three would reflect past bottom threes and include Matt and Allison. But I was wrong and surprised like everyone else. I think Allison is actually in a good position now being the only female left.
If last night taught us anything it is that anything can happen on Idol, and it doesn’t matter what you think is going to happen there are always going to be surprises.
Goodbye Matt I really enjoyed watching you on Idol, and I thoroughly believe that you have a wonderful career ahead of you.
