A lot of men’s magazines do lists of the women that men find sexiest every year, but website AfterEllen.com has given a voice to lesbian and bisexual women by letting them decide what women in the public eye they consider the sexiest. Here’s a look at AfterEllen’s Hot 100 of 2009 top 10 and some of the other women on the list:
Portia De Rossi was number one, and it’s easy to see why. Ellen’s lovely better half has a new fun show of her own, playing an eccentric but sexy boss in ‘Better of Ted’. Since she and Ellen are now married, it’ll be interesting to see if the next step for these very successful women will be starting a family together.
Jennifer Beals is next on the list, and although she’s straight, she’s a big advocate for gay and lesbian rights. She’s also starred on the edgy hit show ‘The L Word’, and she continues to be incredibly sexy long after her ‘Flashdance’ days, so it’s easy to see why she was so high on the list.
‘Imagine Me & You’ and ‘Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles’ star Lena Headley is number three, followed by two other ‘The L World’ favorites Leisha Haley and Sarah Shahi, who also starred on the show ‘Life’.
A woman who is definitely not afraid to speak her mind, Rachel Maddow, is new on the list at number six. She’s like the female version of Keith Olbermann, and she’s the first lesbian to host a prime-time show. There’s something undeniably sexy about her androgynous style, and she’s an incredibly intelligent and funny woman who’s a whole lot of fun to listen to.
’30 Rock’ star and very funny woman Tina Fey lands the number seven spot, probably thanks to a role on the show that requires her to prove herself again and again against the boys she works with. Tina Fey definitely can pull off geek chic, and while her character’s less-than-glamorous looks are often a joke on the show, fans all think she’s absolutely adorable.
A woman with real curves, Sarah Ramirez, comes in at number eight. Her character on ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ shocked audiences by coming out and becoming one of the few gay or lesbian characters on primetime television.
Angelina Jolie barely makes the top ten, but the sultry bisexual beauty definitely deserves a spot on it. She’s beautiful, open about her sexuality, a humanitarian, and a great mom, so what’s not to like about her, other than the fact that she’s just too perfect?
Gro Hammerseng rounds out the top ten. She’s the captain of Norway’s handball team, which won the gold medal at the 2008 Olympics. So why is this woman that many of us have never heard of so high on the list? Well, she’s openly a lesbian and in a loving relationship with her teammate, Katja Nyberg. So it’s no wonder that lesbian and bisexual readers see this champion as not only an Olympic gold medallist, but as a champion for their cause.
New additions that debuted high on the list include ‘Twilight’ star Kristen Stewart, and an actress who came out as a lesbian in 2009 (and daughter of Cybill Shephard), Clementine Ford. Lindsay Lohan moved up higher on the list, probably due to her on-again, off-again relationship with female DJ Samantha Ronson, and the woman with the golden guns and First Lady of the United States, Michelle Obama, made her debut on the list.
I much prefer AfterEllen.com’s list of these sexiest of women to those of men’s magazines; being pretty isn’t the only qualification to making it, and many of the women on it have a lot more to bring to the table than just good looks, making them women we can all admire.
