2008 was a great year for the Alabama football program and Head Coach Nick Saban. The Crimson Tide kicked off the season with a huge upset victory over the favored Clemson Tigers and continued to steamroll through their regular season schedule going undefeated at 12-0. It was a huge accomplishment for the University, the coaching staff, the players, and the fans.
The team headed into the SEC championship game with high hopes as they were once again the underdogs, by a slight margin, to Tim Tebow and the Florida Gators. The team and the fans’ hopes of a SEC championship and a possible spot in the NCAA National Championship title game were crushed as the Tide fell to the Gators by a score of 20 to 31.
In total disarray the Alabama Crimson Tide then went on to the Allstate Sugar Bowl to face the Utah Utes. Disappointed by themselves and unimpressed with their bowl situation the Crimson Tide got picked apart and dismantled by the Utes as the Tide looked to be phoning in their performance. The game ended with a 31-15 score as Alabama took the loss with shame and Nick Saban went back to the drawing board to prepare for this upcoming season and hopefully avoid a breakdown like what was seen in 2008.
Another impressive recruiting class, ranked #1 in the nation by many recruiting services for the second year in a row, the Crimson Tide is looking as deadly as ever. Quarterback Greg McElroy and Wide Receiver Julio Jones are looking to create magic in the Tide’s aerial offense while the defense is a Nick Saban defense, and that always means trouble for the opposing offense.
Many analysts and fans are of the opinion that this year’s schedule is much easier on the Tide, and the possibility of another undefeated regular season could very well become a reality, but only time will tell if that prediction holds true. One thing is for sure, everyone involved with the University of Alabama’s football program, and especially the rabid Crimson Tide nation, is anxious and very excited to get things started and welcome the 2009 season.
