In the opening comments of the March 10 American Idol show, Simon dropped a bombshell announcing that two contestants will be going home tomorrow night. The American Idol Top 13 performed Michael Jackson songs tonight. This seemed to be a challenge for some since they weren’t even born when many of these songs were hits. Lil Rounds kicked off the night with The Way You Make Me Feel. Randy loved the bluesy R & B feel to the song and Kara hopes to hear her on the radio. Paula told her she is a force to be reckoned with Simon thought it was good, but hated her outfit.
Adam Lambert was definitely the standout performance of the night singing Black and White. Paula commented that in all the years of doing the show, no one has looked more comfortable on the stage and Randy feels he is the most current and could make a record now. Simon felt it he is in a totally different league than the other contestants. And, Kara said, “I hope Michael Jackson is watching.” Matt Giraud gave one of the best performances of the night as well accompanying himself on the piano with Human Nature. Randy thinks he is a combination of Robin Thicke and Justin Timberlake and the others commented that he is authentic, talented and very good.
Scott MacIntyre sang a nice rendition of Keep The Faith at the piano. The judges were impressed that he learned to play the song in a week. They liked seeing him in his comfort zone at the piano but want to see more sparks from him with more challenging songs. Danny Gokey received positive comments for his performance of Pretty Young Thing. Simon called him a white guy with soul, but didn’t like his dancing. Paula feels he is on his way to the finals and Randy loved it. Michael Saver performed a passionate version of Your Not Alone and Randy thought it was one of the best songs of the night. Kris Allen performed Remember The Time with his guitar and it was obvious that the young girls in the audience absolutely love him and Kara and Paula called him adorable and sexy. Allison Iraheta, 16, the youngest performer in the competition, sang Give Into Me and the judges felt it was a good performance and like her rocker style. Jasmine Murray, 17, also one of the younger performers, sang I’ll Be There and got mixed reviews from the judges. They seem to like her poise and stage presence but want to see her acting her age.
Some of the other contestants did not fair so well. Megan Corkery took a lot of hits from the judges for choosing Rockin Robin. Simon called it a stupid song choice and thought she looked clumsy and her vocals were bad. Paula thought her performance was unique and quirky and Randy didn’t think the song allowed her to be herself. Anoop Desai got slammed from all four judges on his song choice of Beat It. Paula, who always finds something positive to say, thought it sounded like karaoke. Randy agreed with Paula and Kara felt disconnected. Simon didn’t mince words and called his performance horrible, light weight and a bad impersonation of Michael Jackson. Jorge Nunez performed Never Can Say Goodbye. The judges called his performance old fashioned, non-emotional and corny with an awful arrangement.
Alexis Grace was the last performance of the night with Dirty Diana. Randy and Kara thought the performance was good and like her attitude. Paula thought she was fantastic and Simon thought she did well, but was a little over the top. The Idol voting numbers have always been 1-866-IDOLS-01 through 1-866-IDOLS-12. It was discovered earlier today that the number ending in a 13 is an explicit phone line, so Alexis was given the dial in number of 1-866-IDOLS-36 since they started with 36 contestants. Ryan Seacrest repeated several times that fans should call into this number and not the number ending in 13. Unfortunately, this phone number glitch may cost her some votes.
Another bombshell was dropped at the end of the show about a surprise change in the rules that will be announced tomorrow night and it involves the judges.
