Michael Jackson’s song catalog was the central theme of last night’s American Idol Top 13 performance show, and most of the contestants did a pretty good job of interpreting the King of Pop’s work. Not surprisingly, Adam Lambert, Danny Gokey and Allison Iraheta turned in the night’s most impressive performances. Here is my American Idol Top 13 performance recap:
Lil Rounds – “The Way You Make Me Feel” I’m not a big fan of Lil Rounds. There is nothing about her, in my view, that is particularly new or refreshing. If anything, the song she chose was restrictive – it didn’t give her an opportunity to show her range. Her performance was underwhelming.
Scott MacIntyre – “Keep The Faith” Scott MacIntyre’s performance was just OK. As Kara Dioguardi said, it was “not the most dynamic performance.” And Randy Jackson was also correct in pointing out that it was “very safe.”
Danny Gokey – “P.Y.T.” Danny Gokey is my favorite contestant among the top 13 and he did a great job with this tune. Danny has been blessed with a soulful, bluesy voice and he used it effectively last night. Danny rocked the house!
Michael Sarver – “You Are Not Alone” I’m not a big Michael Sarver fan, but I was impressed with his performance. There were some rough spots, but, overall, he did a fine job. He’s definitely not going to be the next American Idol, though.
Jasmine Murray – “I’ll Be There” I like Jasmine Murray and I hope she makes it through to the next round. “I’ll Be There” is one of my favorite tunes and she did a pretty good job of interpreting it – but not great. Her performance was too uneven.
Kris Allen – “Remember The Time” Kris Allen’s performance last night was not too bad; it certainly was nothing to write home about (unless you’re a tween girl, I suppose), but he did a serviceable job. Simon made a good point. The song did not go well with a guitar. Kris Allen is going to stick around for a while, but he’s not going to be the next American Idol.
Allison Iraheta – “Give In To Me” Allison Iraheta is far and away the best technical singer of the top 13. She’s absolutely brilliant and she has a real shot at being the next American Idol. Nuff said.
Anoop Desai – “Beat It” Anoop didn’t bring enough energy to his performance. He just wasn’t dynamic enough. I like Anoop Dog, but, I’m sad to say that he is going to be booted off the show tonight.
Jorge Nunez – “Never Can Say Goodbye” Great song, but not a great performance. Jorge is a good singer, but I think he blew his chances with his lackluster performance last night. He too will be saying goodbye tonight.
Megan Corkrey – “Rockn’ Robin” I’m a huge fan of the way Megan Corkrey looks, but I’ve never been drawn to her singing. Simon really ripped her last night. He said the song choice was stupid and the dancing was verging on “the ridiculous. Ouch!
Adam Lambert – “Black or White” Adam really rocked the house with his original interpretation of “Black and White.” Simon is correct when he says that Adam Lambert is in a “totally different league.”
Matt Giraud – “Human Nature” Up until last night, I was not a fan of Matt Giraud. But he really won me over last night. I was really, really impressed with both his singing and piano playing. Matt proved to me last night that he is definitely a force to be reckoned with.
Alexis Grace – “Dirty Diana” Alexis Grace’s performance last night was pretty good. And pretty sexy. I like this kid. Kara pretty much nailed it when she said, “You’re a naughty girl, and I like it.” Va va va voom! But sexy isn’t everything (though it’s close) and so I can safely say that Alexis Grace will definitely not be the next American Idol.
Two contestants are going to be let go on tonight’s American Idol results show. I predict that the two will be Anoop Desai and Jorge Nunez.
