Last night on American Idol, 12 more semifinalists took the stage to audition before America. Unfortunately, not one of them knocked it out of the park. What a disappointment. Here is my American Idol top 36, group 2 review.
Jasmine Murray – Jasmine looked beautiful and she’s super sweet but her rendition of “Love Song” was lackluster and uninspired. She’s not quite ready to be an American Idol. Give her time, though. She’s got the goods, she just needs to develop them more.
Matt Giraud – Matt Giraud turned in one of the most disappointing performances of the night. His version of Coldplay’s “Viva La Vida” was profoundly mediocre. And it’s a shame, because the kid does have some decent chops. He’s not going to be the next American Idol.
Jeanine Vailes – The immensely likable Jeanine sang Maroon 5’s “This Love.” I can hardly remember much about it other than the fact that I didn’t like it. Nuff said.
Nick Mitchell (also know as Norman Gentle) – It’s really just a fluke that Nick Mitchell made it this far on American Idol. He actually has a decent singing voice but you never would have known it by listening to him last night. To sum up, his performance was a train wreck. There’s no way he’s going to be voted into the top 12. No way.
Allison Iraheta – Bravo Allison, yours was the best performance of the lot. She got my vote, and I hope she advances. She’s only 16, but already has tremendous poise and stage presence. This girl can sing.
Kris Allen – I was shocked that the hyper-critical Simon Cowell actually liked Kris Allen’s version of Michael Jackson’s “Man in the Mirror.” I thought it was tremendously weak – almost embarrassing, in fact. He won’t get enough votes to get into the top 12, but, based upon the judges’ favorable response (Kara was the only judge that wasn’t impressed), I won’t be surprised if he shows up as an American Idol wild card contestant.
Megan Joy Corkrey – Megan was a big hit with all the judges, but she didn’t do it for me. Her singing does not reach me at all. The same thing, however, cannot be said about her looks. She’s drop-dead gorgeous. Just superb.
Matt Breitzke – I liked Matt Breitzke more than the judges did. Simon described his performance as dreadful. But I thought his version of “If You Can Only See” by tonic was fairly decent. Not great by any stretch of the imagination, but acceptable.
Jesse Langseth – Jesse Langseth sang “Bette Davis Eyes.” This was a poor song choice, in my view. Randy noted that she should have picked with a wider range (more high notes), and I have to agree with him.
Kai Kalama – Nice kid. Nice looking. Not the next American Idol. Nuff said.
Mishavonna Henson – This girl can definitely sing. She did not, however, put quite enough feeling and passion into her performance. I think she’s going to get a respectable amount of votes, though. She has tremendous potential. She’s definitely one of the best technical singers on American Idol this season.
Adam Lambert – The flamboyant Adam Lambert sang “Satisfaction” by the Rolling Stones. I was very disappointed when I heard he was going to be performing this song. I cringed, in fact. I wanted to hear him sing something more melodic. He had some moments, but overall, his performance was less than stellar. He will, however, be voted one of the top three. He already has a lot of devoted fans that are pulling for him.
So there you have it, my American Idol top 36, group 2 review. I predict that Adam Lambert, Megan Joy Corkery and Allison Iraheta will be voted into the top 12 tonight.
