I was officially given the word earlier this past week: I was chosen as a Category Editor for the Home Improvement category on Associated Content.
It is an honor for me to be chosen, as I know that AC probably had lots of qualified applicants and narrowing their decision down to just a few was probably very difficult (I’m not sure I would have chosen me, but I’m glad they did!).
With this new responsibility, I (along with other CE’s) am going to be browsing and lurking in the Home Improvement articles, looking for great content to feature.
The Home Improvement category includes the topics home improvement, decorating and design and gardening.
Now, a little bit about me.
I am a wife and homeschooling mom to three precious children – ages 11, 9, and 7.
I live in southern Illinois – where the heat is hotter than Hades and the humidity will make your eyeballs sweat.
I love home improvement projects. I have helped my husband do several – from building outdoor sheds, porches, and even a real log cabin (not from a kit, mind you!) to chicken houses (of my own design thankyouverymuch) and more.
I know my way around power tools and think nothing of jumping into my own building project – even if my husband isn’t around. Last summer, while my husband was working, I spend a Saturday building railing around our front porch and steps and putting railing on the stairs of my kids’ treehouse.
I also love to garden.
Whether it’s growing perennials in my butterfly garden or growing vegetables, I love digging in the dirt.
I have a great love for butterflies and moths and study them in detail.
I love to photograph the things in and around my gardens – especially the butterflies that come to visit.
I grew up in a rural, farming family who put out big gardens every year.
My main job in the garden was finding the tomato horn worms on the tomato plants and popping them into a bucket for fishing bait, and pulling the tiny plant suckers from the crooks of the tomato plants.
I have fond memories of the whole family – aunts, uncles, cousins and my grandparents getting together to put up corn, make pickles and eat watermelon – all fresh from the gardens.
My paternal grandmother grew the most beautiful flower gardens imaginable. She knew every flower – perennials, annuals and wildflowers – in the area.
I remember Grandma’s cockscomb (celosia) that she always grew – huge, pink and fuzzy flowers that looked like a rooster comb.
Now, enough of the reminiscing and down to the nitty gritty: I am on the lookout for content pieces – articles, slideshows, videos – to feature in the Home Improvement category.
If you have written a piece that you think would make a nice feature about home improvement, decorating and design or gardening, please drop me a line with a link to it so I can take a look.
I have also started threads in the Associated Content forums. You’ll find them under AC Connect (Just for Fun, and DIY & Crafts). Feel free to post a message in one of those threads with a link to your pieces you’d like me to consider.
With Spring around the corner, I expect to see an influx of great pieces and know I’ll have plenty to choose from – so I hope to be hearing from some great writers, photographers and videographers soon!
