The naming of your child is a special privilege. In times past the Christening ceremony for infants celebrated the official naming or christening of the baby. The first name is referred to as the ‘Christian’ name. Many couples spend long hours researching names for just the right one. And after all, your baby’s name will follow him his whole life through. The name is a source of pride in heritage, family and in self. Are you searching for the perfect baby boy name? I’ve researched name meanings and origins quite extensively. I’ve explored gender equivalents, variations and diminutives. Here is my list of ten boys names options. I’ve bases this list on:
Originality: None of these names are invented, but they are very original and unique. Many names are taken from history and may have been more frequently used, but only in long past centuries.
Religious or Royal Significance: Many of the names in my list have a religious significance is one culture of another. The baby names may also been used by royalty of one country or another.
Meaning: I believe that it is important to know the meaning of the baby’s name. Children usually become interested in the background behind their name at some point.
Origin: Knowing the etymology of a name will help you to choose a name that will fit with the family surname. It isn’t necessary to stay strictly within your ethnic background when choosing a baby name. But you may want to know how the name is said in other languages or cultures. Some names, like James, John and Matthew have variations in many different languages.
Here is my list of baby boy names. I’ve included some possible middle names as well.
Rainer ~ Rainer Maria Rilke was a well-loved German poet. While Rainer sounds like it comes from the name genre based on occupation (Thatcher, Sawyer, Hunter, Taylor), Rainer is a more nebulous. Rainer has origins in Swiss, who speak a dialect of German in which Rainer means ‘strong counselor’. Rainer has Norwegian origins as well; ‘powerful army’ is the meaning here. I suspect that Rainer may have been spelled Reignor as some point in history. For a middle name, I like the poet’s. In Catholic Germany and France, boys may be named ‘Maria’ in reverence to the Holy Mother of God.
Ciaran: Pronounced ‘Keer-on’ or ‘keer-in’, at least 26 saints in the Catholic calendar are named St. Ciaran. Ciaran is an Irish name that means ‘little dark one’. Ciaran Michael or Ciaran Patrick were names that I had picked out.
Rhys: Pronounced ‘Rees’, this names is an ancient Welsh name. Rhys is often hyphenated with other names and has become a surname as well. Rhys means ‘ardent, zealous, fiery’.
Remy or Rene: Both of these names are French and are quite old names. Remy simply means, ‘from Rheims’.
Byron: This names hails from old England and most notably is the surname of the Scots poet, George Gordon Lord Byron. The name means of the barn or byre. James makes a nice middle name.
Maarten: Beautiful name of Latin origin meaning from the god Mars (or Aries, in Greek); both are the gods or war. I’ve chosen the Dutch spelling. Famous saint’s name, most notably St. Martin of Tours, a soldier, who is featured in the painting ‘St. Martin and the Beggar’ by El Greco.
Nikolas: I’ve chosen the Greek spelling of this name as the name originates from the Greek. Nikolas, Nicholas, Nickolaus are variations of the name. Nickolaus is mentioned in the Bible as an early Christian. St. Nicholas was the bishop of Myra in the 4th century. Nikolas is the patron saint in Holland, Greece and Russia. Nicholas means ‘victorious people’.
Dafydd: Another Welsh name, we spell is David. In it’s deepest roots Dafydd is a Hebrew name which means ‘beloved’ in both cultures.
Cephas: This is a name of Hebrew origin and means the same as Peter in Greek (Petra, petros or ‘rock’). St. Peter, Peter the Great in Russia, there are many well-known historical people named Peter. I like the variation of Cephas.
Alexi– short for Alexander, Alexi is the Russian diminutive for the Greek Alexander. We remember the Macedonian conqueror of the ancient world, Alexander the Great. Alexi Romanov was the youngest son of Czar Nikolas and Czarina Alexandra which royal family was killed during the Bolshevik revolution in 1917. The name means ‘defender, protector, warrior’.
Jude: Latin variation of the Hebrew Judah (a brother of Joseph, one of the twelve tribes and the tribe from Jesus traced his lineage). Jude means ‘praise and thanks’. Variations are Judson, Judd, Judge and Yehudi. (Famous child violinist Yehudi Menuhin).
There are so many wonderful names for baby boys. Whatever name you choose for your child will be special because you chose the name in love.
