Baseball is a national pastime, and a great way to spend time with family. If your child is playing baseball, or just likes to watch it on television, then you’ll enjoy this list of the best baseball movies for kids. These baseball movies for kids are family friendly, and entertaining enough that adults will enjoy them just as much as the kids. Gather the family together for movie night, and enjoy.
The Sandlot is my favorite baseball movie. Set back in the early 1960’s, we follow the antics of a group of pre-teen boys that live for baseball. When Scotty Smalls moves into town, he is not very athletic and a bit of a nerd. In an effort to make friends and fit in, he slowly learns the ins and outs of baseball and is recruited to join the “team”. Watching the boys play ball is only a small part of the fun, as they also tackle “the beast” that lives inside the fence behind the sandlot they play baseball on.
The Sandlot has a run time of 101 minutes, and is rated PG for mild language. There is nothing inappropriate for children in this movie, and it is a lot of fun to watch. There is excitement, mystery, suspense, laughter, and a lot of nostalgia in this great baseball movies for kids.
Released in 1993, The Sandlot stars James Earl Jones, Denis Leary, Tom Guiry, and Karen Allen, among others. This is a MUST SEE for baseball lovers of all ages. This movie was such a hit that there were two sequels made. However, the sequels are just awful and basically follow the same storyline as the original Sandlot but with different actors.
Rookie of the Year
Rookie of the Year is a fun-filled baseball movie for kids that stars Gary Busey, Thomas Ian Nicholas, Albert Hall, and others. The star of the movie is 12 year old Henry Rowe Gartner (played by Nicholas), who accidentally discovers that after a cast is removed from his broken arm, he has new talent; he can throw a baseball at an amazing speed of 100 mph. While at a Chicago Cubs baseball game, he is discovered and is signed on as part of the team.
This movie puts into action every young baseball player’s dream come true – To be part of a real baseball team. After being signed on, though, Henry soon learns that he has to give up the normal things in life, and begins missing his friends and school. Rookie of the Year is a great baseball movie for kids, and will be something your child will want to watch again and again.
Released in 1993, Rookie of the Year is rated PG for mild language and has a run time of 103 minutes. There is nothing inappropriate for children to see, and it will have them laughing out loud during many scenes.
Angels in the Outfield
Angelis in the Outfield is a unique baseball movie for kids, and was one of my children’s favorites because of the angels that show up in the outfield. In the movie, not everyone can see the angels, but when a young boy named Roger sees them at a Los Angeles Angels baseball game, he knows it is a sign.
Roger, who lives in a foster home, desperately wants to be back home with his father. He, and his foster-brother and friend, J.P. begin praying about living together with a real family, and for their favorite baseball team, the Los Angeles Angels, to win the championship. Not an easy task since the Angels are in last place. With a little prayer, a little hope, and help from the Angels in the Outfield, we learn that nothing is impossible.
Angels in the Outfield is a good movie for the entire family. The kids will like the special effects of the angels, and adults will appreciate the storyline. This movie has a run time of 102 minutes and is rated PG for mild language. Released in 1994 by Disney, it’s worth the time to watch this one.
