This guide is a short excerpt from http://www.wowtalentspecs.com/Bestblooddeathknightpvpguide.html :
Let me start by saying that I have a lot of experience in world of warcraft and considered myself one of the best in stormstrike until I retired a few months ago. I play every now and then just for kicks but devote most of my time sharing tips and tricks with others. I have played every class at 80 and know probably every trick there is to know. You don’t need the best gear, or enchants, and epic gems to win. You just need to be calm, and follow my guide.
As a blood death knight there are some classes you love to see running by themselves, and there are some that you avoid. All death knights hate two things, Shamans and other Death Knights. You probably hate fighting other death knights the most, but after this, maybe you will have a change in heart.
First of all let me recommend a deep blood build with dancing rune weapon and dip into frost for lichborne and annihilation. If you need specific builds, go to my website www.wowtalentspecs.com . This guide is based on a build similar to this with rune tap, hysteria, vampiric blood, lichborne, and dancing rune weapon. You also need to learn to key bind if you are not already. This is a huge help and cuts down on the time your eyes are off the enemy.
I will go through a lot of different scenarios with you. Along the way I will throw in some tips you may have never saw before and some strategies that I know you have never used.
When you first see the enemy death knight, the chances are that he is unholy. You should start by knowing two things; He can kite you better than you can kite him, and your anti magic shield is very effective against him.
Now instead of spamming deathgrip just like he is doing, you need to start by getting ready to unload your melee and survival tools. Your anit magic shell has a low cooldown, so if you use it early, there is a big chance you will be able to use it again. This goes for your rune tap also. When the other death knight death grips you, you need to blow your first anti magic shell. The reason behind this is that he has full runes and will unload all the spells he can to stack his diseases because his scourge strike will not hit as hard if they are not stacked on. His rotation should be (in unholy presense) Icy touch, plague strike, blood strike, blood strike in the first 5 seconds which you have your shell active. This will make him reapply icy touch and plague strike to get his diseases on you before he can scourge strike you 6 seconds later.
While your Shell is active, you need to stack your own diseases on. I would not be surprised if he blows his AMS also. Watch for this and if you see this buff, make sure you don’t apply IT or PS. A tip most death knights don’t know is that the rune timer has a 2 second buffer. What this means is that if you use the rune exactly when it cools down, it has a 10 second cooldown, but if you wait 2 seconds before you use the rune, the next cooldown is only 8 seconds. This gives you the joust and burst feel.
The first part of the battle is always the most important because you want to do two things. You want to throw his normal rotation off and you want to make him nervous and blow cooldowns to fast. (In school remember running the mile run and there was always one kid who took off as fast as he could at first. Remember looking at him way in front and thinking you had to catch him to win and this end up throwing you whole routine off and end up losing the race. This same thing is the goal here.) If you get him low fast and you are still floating 90% health, he will start to button spam on his side and not put in solid rotations. This is what you want.
Now that you have blown AMS he is free to stack diseases on you. As he reapplies these, you need to watch your health carefully, and the moment it is 5 to 6k below full hit rune tap. You may ask “why so soon” my answer to this is; is 5k health more that 5k health? If you use it right now, it’s the same as using it at the last second, but you may be able to use it one more time because you only have a 30 second cooldown on it. Actually, this strategy depends on you lasting another 30 seconds.
Your rotation through all of this is very simple; stack on diseases (keep them on) IT,PS,OB,HS,HS,IT,PS,HS,HS,HS,HS. This is a very easy rotation and you can’t really mess it up. Make sure you use OB for your death runes, and make sure you keep diseases stacked. This is all there is to a blood death knight on the dps end. Hopefully you speced into sudden doom and have a lot of instant death coils off of all your heart strikes which will help substantially when fighting high armor opponents.
As you are fighting you will notice that you are standing in a bunch of grasping arms. Simply move out of this and if he wants you back in them he will have to cast another plague strike which knocks his scourge strike rotation off (which is what you want).
Unholy Death knight will have boneshield, amz (which is useless vs you), gargoyle, rune tap, and maybe mark of blood. They will also have a perma-pet, which you can counter by simply summoning your pet right as you run at him. You have more cooldowns and if you control them right, you will have the upper hand. Your heart strikes will kill the pet soon and you will have nothing to worry about.
When you get to 75% health you need to have this macro set up and spam this macro. Make sure you have the death coil glyph that makes DC 20 RP when using it to heal. The macro looks like this:
#showtooltip Death Coil
/cast Death Coil
This will cast lichborne, and heal yourself with death coil every time you hit it. You need to use all your RP while in lichborne, and you should be close to 100% when it wears off. This is a great macro because you will be hard to hit and self healing the whole time.
When you get out of this, you are high health and 15 seconds into the fight. Now you want to unload your offense. You want to hit hysteria and dancing rune weapon. Make sure your runes are cooled down and you are in the HS,HS,HS,HS part of your rotation. Having a full runic power bar is nice also. In most cases you can’t wait for all of this so I always use this macro:
/cast empowered rune weapon
/use (insert your trinket)
/cast dancing rune weapon
This will give you full runic power hopefully, you will have all runes refreshed, but you will not have any death runes. Now you have 10-15 seconds to unload on him. With hysteria ticking, you will find yourself dropping fast. As soon as dancing rune weapon wears off, you need to /cancel hysteria and use this macro.
/cast vampiric blood
/cast rune tap
Your rune tap will be up and you will get a good 7k+ heal from this. This is a must right after hysteria. You should easily be at 14 out of 24k health right now, and unless you were kited, or just executed this wrong, the death knight should be dead. If not lets continue.
If for some reason the death knight you are fighting is not dead, it is because he out gears you. Ill be honest, if you are out geared to badly, all he has to do is spam one button and you lose, if the gear gap is not to wide, then let’s get on with the strat.
I have left one last cooldown at your disposal just in case you are both still alive at this point. Now that vampiric blood is off and you are both pushing dps on each other. Throw a mark of blood on him. This will either take him out of the action, or heal you up a little. By this time he has blown his AMS because you jumped on him fast and he blew a cute little macro he made. His pet is for sure dead unless he has spent ALL of his efforts to keep it alive.
Mark of blood will keep you alive long enough to AMS again and this should be the end of the road for him. If you are still both alive, then one last ditch effort should be your rune tap. This should be just coming up for one more 5k heal. You have gotten a good 4 or 5 rotations in now with hysteria and one full rotation with dancing rune weapon. This is 50k damage at least. With that, you have healed for 4k with blood aura, 17k with rune tap, 5k (at least) with mark of blood, and 5-10k with lichborne death coils. If you started with 20k health, then it would take 56k damage to kill you.
With all the jumping around, and close to equal gear, 60k damage takes a little over a min. of real time 1v1 in pvp. This is exactly the time of the fight described above.
If you are having trouble even while following this guide, then you need to slow down and practice timing. You need to work on gear and enchant as you go. PVP gear is easy to get now, and you should be in 2 piece gladiator in a week.
A tip that you need to take seriously is DO NOT BUTTON SMASH. You need to press a button every second. You never need to have a long gap of nothing, and you never need to press the button like a spammer in trade.
If you get out of range, DO NOT spam IT just because you have a few death runes. If you wait, these runes will deliver twice the damage and not mess up your rotation. You need to remember that this spec is not a kiting frost spec. You need to keep range to a minimum. You also need to time death coils so you don’t waste runic power.
All of this seems so long when you read it, but it is happening at very fast speeds and he is jumping around. Stay in your game and get him out of his. If the other death knight does not react the exact way you expect, just stay with your game plan. If you do it enough, you will find that it becomes second nature when you see an unholy death knight.
