The old saying “An apple a day keeps the doctor away” is actually a wise bit of advise. Apples, like many fruits, contains vitamin C. They also contain many antioxidants, which have been shown to possibly lower your risk of cancer. Apples have less fiber then some of the other fruits, so are useful when you are trying to lose weight. They also help lower cholesterol. Researchers have stated that eating two apples a day, can lower your cholesterol count by 16%. Research also suggests that apples may reduce the risk of prostate cancer, lung cancer, and colon cancer.
Along with the apple, blueberries are one of the ten healthiest foods. They contain powerful antioxidants that may help lower cholesterol. Blueberries were ranked number one out of forty fruits they were compared to. Blueberries have also been linked to the benefit of lowering your risk of heart disease and cancer, along with promoting better vision and urinary health. They also contain an anti-inflammatory property.
Yogurt is another very healthy food. When I was diagnosed with Crohn’s Disease many years ago, it’s one of the foods my doctors suggested I should try. It contains a natural, healthy bacteria that helps boost your immune system. It can also help ward off infections and improve your gastrointestinal health. (A big part of your immune system lies within your intestines). It’s been said that it can help prevent osteoporosis, along with lowering your cholesterol and reducing your risk for high blood pressure. It is an excellent source of calcium and B vitamins.
Sweet Potatoes are one the top 10 healthiest foods also. They contain many nutrients that are high in fiber and potassium, along with Vitamins A and C. Sweet potatoes also have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. They have been shown to stabilize blood sugar levels and also have cancer and heart disease fighting properties.
Almonds are on the list for being healthy too. With the recent rise in contaminated nut products, I have switched to using organic almonds, but that’s a personal preference. Almonds are loaded with mono unsaturated fats (good fat), and also contain protein, fiber, potassium, and calcium. They contain a large amount of vitamin E and have been shown to lower cholesterol levels, lower your risk of heart disease and diabetes. They also contain cancer fighting properties.
Salmon is full of heart healthy omega-3 fatty acids. These properties have been linked to a decreased risk of sudden-death heart attacks, heart disease, Alzheimer’s and memory loss. Salmon has also been shown to help control symptoms of arthritis and depression as well. I would be sure to choose wild salmon over farm raised, due to the fact that the farm-raised may contain too many contaminants.
Tomatoes are high in lycopene.Lycopene is a powerful antioxidant that has many health benefits. Some of those benefits include helping prevent cancer. Tomatoes have many vitamins, including A and C, as well as potassium. It is said that eating tomatoes also decreases the risk of developing heart disease, increases prostrate health and may lower cholesterol. For the full effect of lycopene, it’s a good idea to choose organic tomatoes and/or ketchup if possible, because they normally contain much higher amounts of lycopene. Tomato juice can also be used, but you might want to check out the low sodium types available.
Broccoli is included in the ten healthiest foods list because it’s a proven cancer fighting food. It is high in antioxidants and loaded with vitamin C, calcium and folic acid. Eating broccoli causes the body to create natural cancer fighting substances. Diets including broccoli have been shown to prevent a number of different types of cancers. It is high in soluble fiber and low in calories. It can also help prevent osteoporosis and treat high blood pressure.
Eggs help promote eye health and also help prevent age-related macular degeneration. Although they were shunned for their cholesterol count a few years ago, extended research finally showed that saturated fat (eggs have very little) plays a bigger role than the cholesterol in food in raising our cholesterol. Eggs are full of high-quality protein, and are an excellent source of the carotenoids lutein, choline, and xeanthin. Eggs are one of the best sources of choline, an essential nutrient – especially for pregnant women. The American Heart Association has given eggs the thumbs-up for healthy people. As long as you limit your average daily cholesterol intake to 300 mg, you can enjoy an egg a day without worry.
Berries, of many different varieties, may prevent cancer and heart disease, They provide all sorts of antioxidants. In one study, wild blueberries topped the list of antioxidant-rich fruits, followed by cranberries, blackberries, raspberries, and strawberries. The color of berries comes from a pigment called anthocyanin. It is an antioxidant that helps neutralize “free radicals”. Free radicals are the cell-damaging molecules that can help lead to chronic diseases, including cancer and heart disease. Berries, particularly cranberries, may also help ward off urinary tract infections.
