Live in Austin? Visiting Austin? There are so many places in this area that you don’t want to get stuck in the wrong one. Life’s short, don’t waste time hanging out in a so-so place.
This is a review of the best honky-tonk bars that Austin has to offer.
5. The Gingerman Pub
Housing almost 200 different types of beer, both bottle and draught, they’re also priced pretty moderately. The crowd is mixed and so is the music, diversifying from alternative rock, to jazz, to country. The decor is eclectic, a lot of exposed brick and wood fixtures. And the service is just right, not too much and not too little. If you’re in the mood to sample different beers, or haven’t gotten far from Budweiser yet, this is the place to do it. The staff is quite knowledgeable and give great opinions. Located at 301 Lavaca Street in Austin, they can be reached at (512)473-8801 and are open nightly until 2 AM.
4. Nutty Brown Cafe
This place is pretty notorious. Not a bad review in its wake, the venue serves really great food along with a friendly wait staff, video games in the bar area, and an open air patio. The decor can’t really be described, its one of those “you have to see for yourself” places, and the vibe is very laid back. A great place to go out on a weeknight, as you don’t have to dress up, no one else is!
Open until 10 pm Sun – Wed, 12 Thurs & Fri and 1 AM on Sat. Located at 12225 Highway 290 West, and can be reached at (512)301-4648.
3. Water Tank Bar & Grill
Did somebody say Dive Bar? That’s exactly what the Water Tank is, boasting the most diverse crowd in Austin (some of the people this place attracts are a little on the strange side, but who am I to judge). The menu is enough to give you a heart attack (literally), but delicious none the less. The Karaoke is second to none, happening on Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays– it’s what they’re known for. On the other nights, they usually host a lot of local bands, which is also fun and unpredictable. Everything is pretty inexpensive, and like most local joints, they have pool tables! Located at 7309 McNeil Drive and open until midnight daily. You can contact at (512)331-9831.
2. The Library Bar
Full of college students, this trendy, frat-chic hang out is a great place to unwind from the daily grind. Open until 2 am daily, this full liquor bar is frequented by a young and hip crowd. Making events out of nearly every college sport, its a great local sports bar with good food and a fun, youthful crowd. The best part…daily drink specials, and even better–never a cover charge. Located at 407 East Sixth Street, and you can contact The Library at (512)236-0662.
And the best bar in Austin is….
Ropers is the best bar in Austin, staying true to the Country theme. Open daily until 2 AM, Ropers has been around for a while now– and for good reason. Its a very clean venue with an exceptionally polite staff, a mixed, but friendly crowd and pretty darn good drink specials. Its located in a nice part of Austin, at 2113 Wells Branch Parkway Suite 500. They offer dance lessons a couple of times a week, as they do have a pretty big dance floor. The DJs are always really good, too, as they mostly play country, but often mix it up with some trendy pop and rock music. For more details, you can call them at (512)990 – 5991.
