If there’s one thing 24 is known for, other than torture and Jack Bauer’s “Damnit”, it is killing off pretty much everyone under the sun except for Jack Bauer. As first established in the first season finale, no supporting character on 24, no matter how important or beloved, is safe. But most of the usual 24 suspects had been safe this season, until last night. Bill Buchanan, one of Jack’s most loyal followers, took the 24 bullet last night to save him and the White House.
Bill Buchanan, as played by James Morrison, first came on 24 as a guest character during Season Four. At first, Bill Buchanan appeared to be another one of Jack’s stuffy, by the book superiors that he usually has to defy every year. But instead, Bill usually had Jack’s back throughout the next three season, even during his torture kicks. He was even married to fellow government employee Karen Hayes in Season Six.
This season on 24, Bill Buchanan went rogue along with Chloe O’Brian, Tony Almeda and Jack to fight off terrorists and government corruption. But that road inevitably led to the White House, and the two of them being taken hostage by deposed dictator General Juma, along with President Allison Taylor.
After the White House raid was depicted in a two hour 24 last week, the climax came in the very first act. Jack planned to blow up the President’s safe room so Bill could get President Taylor to safety. But Jack Bauer can’t die, especially in midseason.
Bill’s excuse to spare Jack came from a scene last week, where General Juma was on the phone with the real villain of the season, Jon Voight’s mysterious Jonas Hodges. Figuring that Jack could find who Juma was working for, Bill took Jack’s lead and got himself blown up.
Ultimately, the President and Jack were saved, while Jack lost another friend. On 24, ever since Jack lost his wife, pretty much no one he has cared for has made it out alive, except for Chloe, Tony and Secret Service Agent Aaron Pierce. Pierce survived the White House takeover as well — though a conversation with the President’s daughter hinted that even beloved former 24 First Lady Martha Logan isn’t around anymore either.
But the death of Bill Buchanan wasn’t a total loss. FBI Agent Renee Walker found that Jack does have some pain, after yelling at him a few episodes ago, so she’s back on the pro-Jack team. Jack has now made it a personal mission to find Juma’s partners, which doesn’t bode well for Hodges – though his people got off to a good start by framing Jack for the murder of a suspect.
The only question is if any more of Jack’s friends will get the “silent clock” by the end of it for Jack, like Bill Buchanan did last night. On 24, one can never be that sure.
