Summer can be the best time for a romantic honeymoon vacation. When money is tight though, it can seem just the opposite, as we look for ways to stash some cash in hopes of turning a cheap summer honeymoon into something memorable. Here are four ideas for spots that can still make your honeymoon special, while keeping you on track with your budget.
Parks – Often people don’t realize what a fantastic resource our state and national parks can be when it comes to recreation and travel, or if they do, they don’t think of it when it comes to planning vacations, and especially honeymoons. Many state and national parks have wonderful lodges, inns, and cabins, many of which were constructed during the depression-era (20s and 30s, not currently), and have maintained their vintage charm. Being in a park, with your newly betrothed, and away from the hustle and bustle of every day life can be extremely romantic, and a big money saver, since the rates are often quite reasonable and activities inside the parks are often very cheap or free.
Resorts – When I say “resorts,” I am referring not to those all inclusive, exotic getaway destinations in the Caribbean or Latin America. I tend to lean more toward those vacations spots that are a little closer to home and a little less expensive. By staying close to home and saving money on airfare, you can afford to spend a little more on accommodations and pamper yourself. Remember, this is your “honeymoon”. It doesn’t have to be filled with non-stop activities and adventure as long as it’s romantic, thoughtful, and well planned.
Road trip – Romanticism is all in the eye of the beholder. While a road trip might seem bland and boring to one, it might seem exciting and adventurous to another. The rush of the open road and the thrill of the unknown can heighten the senses and the libido. Pick out a destination you’ve never been before but have always wanted to go, plan your route, then hit the road and enjoy the trip. Don’t rush yourselves. Stop off at little spots along the way and just enjoy your privacy, the scenery, and the time together. When dusk starts to settle, start looking for a place to stay. You might find the adventure exhilarating and romantic all at the same time.
Las Vegas – While it might sound taboo, there are good reasons to consider Vegas right now for your honeymoon, not the least of which is cheap rates at hotels. The recession/depression is hitting Las Vegas hard and the hotels there are desperate to fill rooms. Besides the good rates, there is a lot more stuff to do in Vegas that’s either free or pretty darn cheap, including touring the Hoover Dam, visiting Lake Mead, exploring Red Rock Canyon, or just meandering through the casinos and wandering the strip. With its party atmosphere, there’s always something going on in Vegas, but at the same time, it can be oddly romantic. With sex selling everywhere you look, it can’t be all that bad of a place for newlyweds.
