What is fulfillment to you? Is it having a huge house with a view to die for? A job that pays well and earns respect? Being well known in your community or even the world? A fast, expensive car? Traveling the world? Helping people? This list can take up pages to write, but you get the idea right?
Maybe you don’t know what it would take for you to be fulfilled, you just know at this moment in time you are anything but fulfilled. Maybe you thought it would be the great career or significant other, once you got it, you find that you are still not fulfilled, now what?
The answer lies right beneath your nose. Don’t believe me? What is it that you are missing? You may appear to already have everything to the people around you, but inside you feel like, “there’s something missing” or, “there has got to be more to life than this!” You already have the answers to what you seek, the way to find the answers is to look in every area of your life, not only the obvious ones.
The problem is, humanity has a one-track mind. You may think, “I just need to make more money and I will be happy” or, “once I find true love everything will be okay.”
We are a diverse people, with diverse needs. We need fulfillment on a multitude of levels. Reaching one area of fulfillment or achievement is just that, one area. Leaving us to feel empty in other areas and asking the question, “I made it where I wanted to get, why do I still feel lost and unfulfilled?”
The answer is simple; you have neglected the not so important areas, (in your mind) to satisfy the important areas of the time.
There are basic human needs that need to be met, food, water, shelter and safety. Aside form these basic needs; it is an individual quest for fulfillment. Other humanistic values include; self worth, purpose, spirituality, community and achievement.
Self worth is just that, how valuable are you? If you have low self-esteem this can be almost impossible to look at yourself as valuable and an important contribution to this world. If you have a healthy self-esteem it is still difficult to realize how truly valuable you are to the world around you. You can start by realizing what an impact you have already, strive to be a major contributor to your world. Even if you have a job as a janitor at the bowling alley that has two people that frequent the place. YOU can make it clean, pleasant and enjoyable to everyone that comes in there. Never belittle yourself saying what you do is not important!
Purpose can be achieved by doing your best at everything you do now, realizing why you want to do what you are doing, So you might not have a lifestyle that reflects your purpose, you might not know what your purpose is, if you pay attention to your motivations in what you are doing right now, seek out opportunities that follow suit with your motivations, you will find your purpose!
Spirituality does not necessarily mean religion. It is the age old question, “what area we? Why are we here? Is there something greater than me?” Maybe you prefer to take the view of evolution or the big bang theory. Creation and what happens to us when we die, or when people we love dies effects our level of fulfillment. You need to believe in what you believe in.
Community is the connection to other mammals that have the ability to communicate and show affection. I once heard of a study done, I don’t remember who did it but I remember it was a king. He took a bunch of babies and did not allow human contact, except for feeding. They were not to be held for feeding, talked to or touched. All the babies dies within a month. We need people in our lives!
You need to feel like you are achieving things. If you feel like you are making achievements on a daily basis you will feel fulfilled!
Remember fulfillment doesn’t come from one specific area. It is a balance of self! It is meeting the basic human needs as well as paying attention to desires. Do not pay too much attention to one area, while neglecting other aspects of your life. Find the healthy balance and you will be fulfilled!
