As a first time homebuyer, I had never been on a home inspection and really had little idea of what to expect. I had heard horror stories about local home inspectors and their poor service or problems that they had missed. Fortunately, the representative from CornerStone Home Inspection Services and the home inspector review he conducted made the process not only efficient and informative but pleasant as well.
Our realtor highly recommended CornerStone as a reliable inspection service in the Chicago area. Upon arriving for the scheduled inspection appointment, my wife and I found that even though we had arrived early, our inspector had beaten us there and had already inspected the outside perimeter of the house and the garage. This came as a welcome surprise since it was mid-February in Chicago and we had brought our one-year-old son with us. I was impressed to say the least, and this definitely made a great first impression.
After walking us through some minor issues found outside and some repairs needed to the garage, we went inside the house. Not knowing what was expected of me, I came prepared. I had pen and notepad handy, but our inspector assured me that this was not necessary, as he would be presenting us with a detailed report covering every aspect of the house after the inspection was completed.
The entire process probably lasted a little over an hour and a half. Our inspector was quite personable and made some small talk, but at the same time ensured that I was presented with an in-depth explanation of what he was doing at all times as I followed him through the house. He took time to explain various trouble spots and maintenance issues, as well as pointing out shut off valves, piping, etc. All in all, he was very thorough and made me feel confident that I was getting my money’s worth for his services.
Several days after the inspection, we received by way of email, a 10-page, comprehensive review of all the inspected areas of our home. Due to our CornerStone inspector’s fine work, we negotiated with the seller, the repair of a neglected electrical panel, several outdated electrical outlets, received a credit for garage damage, and even had a minor gas leak fixed near the furnace.
The learning experience alone would have been worth the price of the inspection, but receiving these repairs saved us thousands of dollars. Our inspection bill was even reduced by $25 dollars due to a coupon on CornerStone’s website. To top it all off, upon completion of the inspection, we were presented with a three-ring binder, which included a resource manual containing information for homeowners regarding repairs, checklists, and time frames, as well as a list of recommended contractors and repair companies. Overall, I found CornerStone to be a reliable, friendly, honest, and efficient service that I highly recommend to those in the Chicago area.
