Coach K, Mike Krzyzewski, got a look at Barack Obama’s NCAA bracket. ESPN and many other sports fans looked at it too, but Coach K was more interested in where Obama’s NCAA bracket had Duke. The Blue Devils are the 2 seed in the East regional, but Pittsburgh is the favorite in many brackets to go to the Final Four. This was reflected in Obama’s NCAA bracket, where he has Duke losing in the Elite 8. Coach K took the time to nudge Obama for it in a press conference yesterday.
After hearing about Duke losing in the region, Krzyzewski commented that although he is a fan of President Obama, he is wrong. In fact, Krzyzewski commented – either in jest or in annoyance – that Obama should stick more to the economy than picking NCAA brackets.
Krzyzewski’s comments came after Obama’s bracket was revealed on ESPN yesterday. Obama has Duke losing to Pittsburgh in the Elite 8, and had Pitt, Louisville, Memphis and North Carolina in the Final Four.
To make matters worse for Krzyzewski-ville, not only is Duke not going to the Final Four in the Obama NCAA bracket, but North Carolina, of all teams, is slated to win it all against Louisville.
Obama’s bracket largely held true to seeding form, which is why Duke got as far as the Elite 8. Obama could have had Duke losing to a team like Villanova in the Sweet 16, or even to Texas or Minnesota in the second record. If he did that, it wouldn’t be a massive shock.
Duke has not gotten as far as the Sweet 16 in a few years, a rarity under Krzyzewski. To Obama’s credit, he has the Blue Devils going farther in the NCAA brackets than they have in a while.
Whether Coach K is legitimately mad or not is not a question that would likely be asked of most other coaches. With Krzyzewski and Duke having many enemies all over the country, it is more easy to see Coach K being serious with his comments, rather than joking around.
Nonetheless, Duke will begin to try and prove Obama wrong tonight, as the second seeded Blue Devils begin their March Madness run tonight. Duke is heavily favored against Binghamton, which is making their first ever NCAA tournament appearance. Obama forsees that Duke will take on Texas in the next round on Saturday.
