I cannot wrap my head around what is happening between Israel and Palestine. As a person who is really on the outside of the intricacies of politics as a whole, my approach is completely unbiased; or as unbiased as a person can be! I do not look at them as ‘Israeli and Palestinian’, or ‘Jews and Muslims’; I perceive them as two separate conflicting cultures. Picture my views as that of an alien coming to earth and studying the behavior of two neighbors of different beliefs and traditions, who have had a long history of conflict.
I’ve tried to look at it from both sides. Israel is the only Jewish country and so it is understandable that they feel the need to protect their Jewish state and protect their land from violence and threats. Palestine is a country that feels abused and attacked, and also acts on protecting their rights to exist. Years upon years of failed attempts towards some sort of peace agreement speaks volumes of the relationship that these neighboring communities maintain.
It’s clear that each side is going to stay headstrong on their approach of the situation. So what now? I look to find at least some balance in the situation but isn’t it obvious who has the upper hand here? Israel has the army, the artillery and the resources to implement their rules and conditions. However, the number of suicide attacks and the terrorist groups that arise from Palestine are increasing. The Israeli’s are gradually moving in on the Palestinians’ land and building settlements for their own people. So what is the problem here? The problem is that I believe that perhaps even though they are being wrongfully attacked, the Israeli’s are being a bit greedy and stubborn concerning the land. Why can they not keep what is already known to be their land and let the Palestinians keep their own land? But this is no new debate and these are age-old questions. So here’s another thought to ponder: where is the rest of the world? Why are the leading nations not stepping in and trying to talk some sense into the Israeli’s? Where is the Arab nation and why do they not stand by and advise the Palestinians?
No one is in the right here. There are a lot of wrong and a few rights. And absolutely zero solutions. It looks to me that as long as pride and controversies about land that belonged to whoever thousands of years ago are just going to go on forever. In the meanwhile, millions of innocents will be paying the price. So where is the justice in that? If these communities cannot rely on their governments, then what kind of hope do they have? If the international community with all its money and resources and brilliant minds cannot even come up with some sort of power or solution to sort this out then what kind of effect will it have on future conflicts that arise anywhere else in the world? The more fortunate nations will always want more, and the less fortunate will always want more too. You work it out. There is a way to balance, perhaps it is basic math but how do we apply that to real life situations? How do we gain some common sense as to setting ultimatums for the whole world to feel responsible for the well-being of mankind? It’s a question with a lot of answers but no real action is being done. I wish we could look past where we come from and what happened in the past and wipe the slate clean and start again. Because that’s the only way to gaining any kind of peace. But we are humans, full of hope and error.
