Recently, I made a trip to Berea, KY to visit my daughter who is away at college there. We had a great time together. It proved to be the stress reliever that she needed. While I was there I gave her the option of going anyplace that she wanted for dinner. She thought for a moment and the answered “The Cracker Barrel.”
Don’t get me wrong. I like the Cracker Barrel and have done a few reviews on them. But this time, I was really hoping she’d suggest either the Chinese or the Mexican restaurants.
So this is how I found myself at the Cracker Barrel in Berea, KY. It is just off the Interstate 75 exit #76. This is the main Berea exit. There is a Wal-Mart there and various fast food restaurants, an Econo Lodge and other motels. You’ll also find several gas stations. The conglomeration of businesses make this a great stop for weary travelers.
The Cracker Barrel in Berea, KY is easy to get to. It’s right next to the Wal-Mart. There is a large parking lot with plenty of room to maneuver. Outside the restaurant are the familiar white rocking chairs, checkers games and benches.
During our visit the restaurant was moderately busy. About half of the tables in our area had customers. We were seated immediately with no waiting.
In a couple of minutes our server stopped by our table. She asked if we were ready and took our drink order. My daughter and I both asked for water. These took a few minutes to arrive and the server took our order.
I decided to try the new Chicken Skillet. The server said she had not tried it yet. She did say that a lot of people had ordered it and that it had not been sent back yet. That sounded like good news to me. I thought it was worth a try at $7.99.
The Chicken Skillet comes with a side item and your choice of biscuits or corn muffins. I took cole slaw and muffins.
My daughter ordered another new skillet. She decided to try the Chicken Monterey. Her side items were green beans and corn muffins.
The meals arrived promptly via a runner. We were about 1/3 of the way through with them when our server stopped by. Our water glasses were nearly empty. She came back to bring a refill. We didn’t need anything else at that moment.
About a minute later she appeared with our check. On the back was written “Thank you.” It was the last that we saw of her.
The Cracker Barrel has wonderful ice cream sundaes. A tall mug is layered with syrup, ice cream and then the toppings are added on. They’re terrific. Our plans were to order one. The problem was that the server never came back.
Throughout our visit the service was slow. This was a disappointment. Our server only asked once if we wanted a water refill. The dishes were not cleared and were still on the table as we left.
Dinner cost us $18.00 and change.
Our experience at the Cracker Barrel in Berea, KY was not the best. I asked if the server was new and was told no. In fact, the manager said that she was one of their best. If so, maybe she was just having an off day? The problem with that is that we might not be back to find out.
