If you watched The Alaska Experiment on Discovery Channel you know how exciting the show was. The show was full of excitement, fear, arguing, sadness, and pride. These were the top craziest moments from The Alaska Experiment whether they were happy or sad, scary or exciting.
Number 10 moment is: When the Flower Lake Friends Gather Plenty of Wood But Overlook the Need to Eat
The Flower lake group spent a lot of time gathering wood and making sure the wood was all cut so they could survive though the cold winter. The only problem is they were so focused on gathering wood they didn’t spend the time they needed gathering food for winter. The other crazy part about this moment is that after spending this long gathering wood, half way through the experiment they hike to Hawkins Glacier and spend the rest of their time there, leaving us to wonder what happened to all the wood they gathered.
Number 9 moment is: Their First Step into the Wilderness
The very first episode was very revealing. It showed why the people decided to do this experiment. It gave us insight into how the rest of the episodes would be. We saw the people who would probably spend most of their time miserable and complaining and who would make the best out of their time here.
Number 8 moment: Tim Wagner’s Goat Hunt
The Flower Lake group were not interested in hunting, they had never held guns before and didn’t like the idea of killing animals. But when their protein needs were falling way below where they should be, they realized they would have to go on a hunt. Tim was the one who drew the short straw and he stepped up to the plate. Tim did a great job and soon came home with a large goat. Jasmine also had a huge growing moment when she cooked the goat meat, even though this was something she had never done before.
Number 7 moment is: Carolyn Wise Sprinkling Pee around the Cabin
This was definitely one of the more disgusting moments on the show. Carolyn Wise thought that be pouring the family’s urine around their cabin they would be marking their territory and keeping wild animals including bears away. Does marking your territory with urine work? Well the Wise family was not attacked by bears, so possibly. I don’t know which part of the urine pouring was more disgusting, the fact that they had to keep their urine in jars until they took it outside to sprinkle it around their cabin, or that they had to smell the lingering smell of their urine around their cabin.
Number 6 moment is: Bernice Pierson Out Alone Catching The Salmon
In the second episode when they had not been in Alaska that long, Bernice decides to go fishing alone while her husband was out on a hunt. This is a great girl moment, when she overcomes any fear she has of bears so she can try and catch some food for her and her husband. This moment becomes crazier when she starts to hear things, and remember that when you catch a fish you have to quickly kill it so it won’t attract bears. Bernice was phenomenal, and did a huge amount to help her and her husband stay.
Number 5 moment is: Jeff Fredrick Making The Decision To Leave
This was an agonizing decision. Jeff Fredrick got news that his dad was getting sicker, they allowed him to call home and he found out that his dad was not going to last long. Jeff and his partner Liz had to decide if he was going to leave The Alaska Experiment to go home to be with his dad. Jeff made the decision to leave the show to see his dad, and he was flown out and went to the hospital to spend time with his dad during his last moments of life. This was a very sad moment on the show, and we really felt for Jeff.
Number 4 moment is: The Wise Family Fighting
This should probably be the number one moment since this took up a good majority of the show. A more monumental moment would actually be when they weren’t fighting. But the good thing about all the fighting between Carolyn, Dennis, and Jennifer is that it made great TV. It was entertaining to watch them fight about everything from which direction to place your boots to what they were eating. The good part about this moment is that in the reunion show, the Wise family talked about how this brought them closer, it was like free family therapy.
Number 3 moment is: When Tim, Alan, and Jasmine from Flower Lake Hike to Hawkins Glacier
This was a tense moment as we watched the three friends leave their cabin to make the trek to Hawkins Glacier to visit other volunteers on the show. This was a crazy moment because we sat here at home wondering why they would brave the elements just to hike somewhere else. This was a very tense moment when we watched as they made their way across frozen rivers, and up glaciers. We hoped that everything would be okay as the Flower Lake group became delirious and started to hear people singing and calling to them. Fortunately they found their way to the Glacier lake group, safely and no worse for the wear.
Number 2 moment is: When the Wise Family Builds Their Indoor Potty
Yes, I know indoor bathrooms are completely logical to us, but sometimes out in the wild it is not practical. The Wise family is living in a small indoor cabin, and they build their indoor bathroom right next to their kitchen and their food. Yes, I know they didn’t get sick, and everything turned out fine, but it is still gross to think about. I would have tried to put the potty further away from our food, like in the sectioned off part of the cabin. I would prefer people didn’t use the bathroom so close to my food.
And Finally, the number 1 moment from The Alaska Experiment is: The Reunion Show When We Realize How Much All The Volunteers Have Changed
When we see the reunion show we learn so much more about the volunteers. All of them lost quite a bit of weight on the show, making some of them unrecognizable once they have done their hair and makeup. The Alaska Experiment changed their lives. One couple is now engaged, and another couple is planning on moving to the wilderness. I loved looking back and seeing how each group was impacted by their time in Alaska.
