It is no secret that the Playstation 3 lacks role-playing games, especially when compared to its rival the Xbox 360. Any new RPG would therefore be a welcoming sign for RPG fans who own the Playstation 3.
Cross Edge is a collaborated effort between five different companies: Bandai Namco, Capcom, Gust, Idea Factory and Nippon Ichi Software. Because of the licensing issues, many thought that this Japanese RPG would never come to North America. Fortunately, NIS America will be bringing the game stateside. Should Playstation 3 gamers welcome this RPG with open arms? Find out in this preview of Cross Edge for the Playstation 3.
Cross Edge features a crossover story involving familiar characters in addition to brand new faces. You will run into characters from the following games: Ar Tonelico, Absolute Blazing Infinity, Atelier Marie, Darkstalkers, Disgaea, Mana-Khemia 2 and Spectral Souls.
Cross Edge uses 2D sprites instead of 3D textures. As a result, it looks more like a low-end Playstation 2 game than an actual Playstation 3 title. Fortunately, looks aren’t everything in Cross Edge.
The background music for Cross Edge relies on metal and heavy metal tracks. While the English voice-acting is done quite well, you have the option to switch between that and Japanese thanks to the dual language support.
Cross Edge features several unique elements that separate it from other RPGs.
In this Playstation 3 role-playing title, you must collect souls. Soul events are scattered throughout the world map and will unlock items or a segment of the story. You will also run across important event points in addition to saving spots with shops while exploring on the world map.
Once you find yourself inside dungeons, you can search for treasure and fight enemies. The combat system is a mixed between strategic placement and timing attacks. Some characters are better in close range than long and vice versa.
Attacking, on the other hand, requires you to string together the attacks of two characters. Successful combos will result in higher levels of more powerful attacks.
To further boost your combat abilities in Cross Edge, you can equip different costumes that will enhance your stats in addition to giving your character different abilities. The female characters in your party will also change their look via cut scenes.
Cross Edge will retail for $49.99, $10 less than your usual Playstation 3 game. While it isn’t a classic RPG game, it should provide a solid experience for RPG fans on the system when it comes out in late May.
