This is the best day that most teenagers look forward to. It is a time where many are allowed to date, they get their drivers license, and in most cases have one year out of high school done and over with.
I’m sure buy now you’ve guessed it. If you guessed 16 you’re right!
I’m going to tell you a way to make your own home made invitations. Here is what you’ll need to do.
Card stock of any color. You can get them at most stores where they carry a supply of paper such as Walmart. Ask your teen which color they prefer, but I’m going to go with black because it is my daughters favorite. Your card stock should be 8 ½” by 11″
So you get your black card stock and cut it in half. It is best if you invest in a craft paper cutter to get a precise paper cut. If you don’t know what I’m talking about, you can ask your craft center. Many times you will find them in the supply center along with the paper, markers and so forth.
After you cut your paper in half you can get some gel colored pens that are made to write on black and write SWEET at the top. Make the letters about 1 inch in size. Only do one of these so you can make sure you get a good template and that the sizes are right for the rest of the card.
Now for the tricky part. Find some number stencils. Take your black card in that already has you writing on it to the store and find one that will fit the numbers 1 and 6 below “sweet” on the bottom of it. If you are going to make ten cards then cut out 10 1’s and 10 6’s. You should use white card stock for this. So make sure you pick up some white card stock and some of your favorite color of glitter. With black, I’d recommend a bright color like bright pink or green. Also get some white or very light colored glitter that will match to cover your letters that say sweet.
Cover the back side of the numbers with glue and glue them onto the card under the word “sweet”. Now of course it will say sweet 16. After that dries use a paint brush and brush glue over the numbers carefully as well as the “sweet” slowly cover it with glitter and shake it off. You can also use two different colors of glitter to add some pizazz. In fact I recommend this. The gel pen underneath is just to give it some outline and it may slightly show through, which is a good thing!
I would suggest using the white glitter for the “sweet” part over any other color.
Now with a printing program you can type out the invitations. If you don’t know how to do it in fourths you can look it up online or ask someone who knows, but if worse comes to worse then use individual papers and make sure the size does not go over the card size. You should have about ¼” border around it.
This will be glued inside the card with the time, place, who it is for and so on. I would use stick glue or better yet, use double sided tape so the glue will not show through. It really depends on your budget. Gluing is fine but just us a tiny bit and spread it out with your fingers before attaching it if necessary.
Make sure it is neat and professional looking. Yes they will know it is homemade but you still want to be neat about it.
This is my own creation. However you can find more do it yourself cards in many places online.
I actually used this to make for someone else last year and they turned out really nice. It might seem like a lot of work, but it really isn’t once you get started. Go ahead and click print at the bottom of this page for a printable version and circle the things you will need. It will be fun and your daughter will always remember it. Don’t forget to save on for her scrapbook.
