Researchers have just recently discovered that a new form of diabetes has emerged. This new form is called double diabetes.
What is double diabetes?
Double diabetes occurs when someone with Type 1 diabetes additionally gets Type 2 diabetes.
As you may or may not know Type1 diabetes occurs typically during childhood. It is an immune disorder where inexplicitly the body begins to attack the beta cells of the pancreas thereby interfering with production of insulin. Sugar is not processed correctly.
Type 2 diabetes occurs later in life as people age and gain weight. They become sedentary. As a result the body doesn’t process sugar well and they need to be treated with diet, medication and in some cases insulin.
Now researchers have discovered “double diabetes.” Not only is it a new find but it is prevalent. Nearly one of three people originally diagnosed with Type 1 have developed double diabetes.
Doctors have concluded that the reason that double diabetes has become so prevalent is that Type 1 patients have not made the necessary lifestyle changes required to keep their diabetes under control.
One key factor that has stood out to the researchers is that those with double diabetes are overweight. That seems to be the key to the development of this new and frankly dangerous condition. It apparently makes cells insulin resistant. That is “double trouble.” Insulin is not manufactured and then, when insulin is introduced medically, the cells won’t accept it.
How can double diabetes be treated?
Of course the initial steps are exercise, water and diet. A person in this situation needs to talk with a dietician to get solid guidance.
Doctors have decided on a completely different approach to treatment after that.
In many circumstances it is a good idea to have both insulin shots and oral medication. Whereas these have been separate treatments in the past now it is necessary to employ them together because the condition of double diabetes is a more complex form of the condition. Double diabetes will have to be followed more closely than other forms because medications may have to be adjusted more frequently.
The best way to treat double diabetes is to never get it. (Isn’t that true of every illness?)
Children who are obese must develop an exercise program and effective diet. This is way more important if they already have Type 1 diabetes.
Diabetes is an illness that reflects our lifestyle; we all must pay attention to that.
