Eminem and Bruno were invited to the 2009 MTV Movie Awards because Eminem and Bruno have entertained and shocked millions over the years. Eminem does it with hard-core rapping, while Bruno does it by reporting on fashion and making straight men very uncomfortable. Of course, Eminem is a real person, while Bruno is one of Sasha Baron Cohen’s insane, controversial alter egos. But at the 2009 MTV Movie Awards, Eminem and Bruno saw more of each other than Eminem appeared to have preferred.
At the 2009 MTV Movie Awards, Bruno was set to present the award for Best Male Performance. Ever the extravagant showman, Bruno was flown onto the stage on wires, wearing an angelic costume that didn’t cover all of his behind.
Therefore, when Bruno “accidentally” landed on Eminem’s lap face first, Eminem got an up close and personal look at Bruno/Cohen’s bottom. The ensuing madness brought a lot of bleeped curse words from Eminem, and Bruno had to announce Zac Efron as the Best Male Performance winner while upside down.
Eminem already has an uncomfortable history with MTV awards show, having been in feuds with Moby and Triumph the Insult Comic Dog at the VMAs. Perhaps the surest sign that Eminem is back on top, aside from his comeback album, is that MTV is playing a joke on him again.
Eminem is often roundly criticized for having homophobic lyrics, so the MTV Movie Awards and Sasha Baron Cohen likely couldn’t resist shoving Cohen’s naughty bits into Eminem’s face. The fact that Eminem completely left the show after Bruno finally got off of him didn’t reflect all that well either.
The uncomfortable positions and Eminem’s attitude could have been staged and pre-planned, which is the current debate around the Internet. But given Cohen and Bruno’s speciality in making targets as uncomfortable as possible, and Eminem’s past inability to handle these kind of jokes against him, it only fuels the impression that it wasn’t staged.
Eminem, Bruno and Sasha Baron Cohen are naturals at sparking controversy almost everywhere they go, even at awards shows. Both Eminem and Cohen were on top of the world and sparked outrage at their acts at the peak of their powers.
But both Eminem and Cohen have been silent for a few years, yet they are coming back with a vengeance this summer, with Eminem’s comeback album and Cohen’s Bruno movie.
The 2009 MTV Movie Awards were probably just a taste of Cohen’s future antics to come in promoting Bruno. As Borat, Cohen went all over the country, in character, to promote Borat and drive people off the wall. Since Bruno is even more flamboyant, and was able to get in a 69 position with Eminem and live, the sky is the limit for Cohen to go even crazier.
Cohen and Bruno are back in theaters this July, while Eminem has only his best selling new album to comfort him now.
