When I first heard the song ‘I Love College’ on the radio, my husband and I joked around about how soft Eminem had gotten and how he must be trying to build a new fan base of frat boys. The song sounded like something a geek that went to his first college party would write, with lyrics about girls getting naked, drinking, staying up late, drinking, eating pizza, drinking, beer pong, and keg stands. The song was more than a little pathetic, and I thought it was really sad that rap’s biggest psychopath had turned to this.
As it turned out, the song ‘I Love College’ wasn’t by Eminem at all. I really don’t follow modern music much, so I had no idea that an Eminem sound-alike named Asher Roth has emerged as the next big white rapper. Asher Roth is, of course, not too happy about being compared to Eminem (although frankly, I don’t think he would have been as popular without sounding just like him), and he continues to try to distance himself from Eminem in interviews and with songs like ‘As I Em’, which directly takes on the comparison.
Fortunately for Asher Roth, he’ll continue to get buzz since Eminem is making a comeback. Eminem’s newest song ‘We Made You’ attacks everyone currently big in pop culture: Kim Kardashian, Lindsay Lohan, Ellen DeGeneres, Jennifer Aniston and John Mayer, Jessica Alba, Amy Winehouse, and even Sarah Palin. Out of all of these he attacked, guess whom Bill O’Reilly was upset about?
But what does Em think about Ash? Has he ripped him apart for stealing his voice ‘The Little Mermaid’ style? Has he made note of how juvenile his song ‘I Love College’ is? Has he written a song about wanting to murder him? No. He’s simply said that he thinks Asher is “dope”. He also did an interview on Angela Yee’s Sirius Satellite radio show in which he discussed his new appearance. Apparently he’s exercising more, staying healthy, and eating chicken breasts. So maybe he has gone a little soft after all.
But I personally prefer Eminem the comedian to Eminem the psycho murderer, and it will be interesting to see what direction he goes in with his album ‘Relapse’, which will hit stores May 19th. It will only feature collaborations with beefcake Dr. Dre and 50 Cent, but he has expressed an interest in working with Lil Wayne and Kanye West in the future.
With Kanye West’s ego, it’s hard to imagine the two of them getting along; the styles of Eminem and Kanye West seem to dramatically clash; and Kanye West would probably definitely want to have first billing. But if Eminem can make his music work with artists like Dido and Elton John, I guess he and Kanye West could produce a big hit. And as far as Lil Wayne goes, he has also expressed an interest in working with Eminem. But what I’d like to see is a show down between Eminem and Asher Roth; there’s your VMA main event of 2009, MTV.
