Fans of television always get excited about the new fall television season. They are always anxious for their favorites to come back, usually due to a cliffhanger or two, and they are also excited to see what freshman fall programs will become instant hits. In addition, truth be told television fans of all ages are also curios to see which shows flop. However, they are truly excited to see a new show become a hit right from the start. In the fall of 2008, CBS found such a run away hit with its new crime show called The Mentalist. In fact, The Mentalist was the highest rated new show of the 2008 fall television season. In addition, the December 2, 2008 episode called Flame Red was the highest rated television show of the week. Due to all of its success, The Mentalist was renewed for a second season in May of 2008. The second season begins on September 24th at 10pm on CBS. The Mentalist will be moving to Thursdays for the fall CBS line up. Here is a brief overview of the show and a preview of what viewers can expect when The Mentalist returns to the CBS fall line up in September.
Simon Baker is back in The Mentalist, after staring in The Guardian for four seasons on CBS. Baker, who is originally from Australia, plays Patrick Jane, an independent consultant with the fictional California Bureau of Investigation. Patrick Jane has a remarkable track record for solving serious crimes using both his keen observation skills and his keen mentalist abilities. Patrick Jane and his colleagues solve cases weekly but their biggest unsolved case involves a serial killer called Red John. In fact, Patrick Jane has a vested interest in catching Red John because Red John murdered his wife and children. Moreover, most of the time he is friendly and playful and that is why is co- workers like him even though he annoys them much of the time with his actions. However, when it comes to catching Red John, Patrick Jane gets a bit frenzied and will do anything to catch him.
The Mentalist on CBS’ fall 2009 line up is a great show and I think it will continue to be a great show on Thursday nights at 10 pm because it was the only real hit of 2008 television season and CBS has been the highest rated network for about three years. The Mentalist will do great in the CBS Thursday night line up because its great storylines and great cast. I love the chemistry between Simon Baker’s character, Patrick Jane and Robin Tunney’s character, Teresa Lisbon. In addition, I like to see how Jane solves the cases that the CBI is presented with each week. I also think that The Mentalist will perform well because Simon Baker has a charm and a wit about him that can’t be missed. The show will do well against other ten o’clock programs due to the fact its lead in program at 9 pm is the original CSI and fans of CSI will like The Mentalist. Plus, I think that the Mentalist will have some new viewers because NBC has put Jay Leno on at 10pm instead of another medical drama, like ER. Jay Leno is the right guy for a light night spot but I am not certain that an hour prime time talk show can compete with an hour long crime drama as great as The Mentalist. The Mentalist has also won a People’s Choice Award for Favorite New Drama Series and Simon Baker has been nominated for an Emmy this year for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series. The Mentalist has great storylines, a great cast, and great accolades; that is why it is and will continue to be a staple in the CBS line up.
