Farrah Fawcett’s story was well known and publicized before Farrah’s Story cleared up the rest of it last night. During the last month, Farrah Fawcett was rumored to be in worse shape than ever due to her cancer, which coincided with NBC buying her Farrah’s Story documentary. For the last several years, Fawcett traveled through Europe to find experimental treatments for her condition, and to try and live with her disease in the meantime. Last night, Farrah’s Story detailed that search in full, while fears of Fawcett’s possible death continue to grow.
Reality television and documentaries have already run the gamut of how much a camera can capture every single detail of someone’s life. Farrah Fawcett used a camera to detail the fight for her very life, as she documented her trials, tribulations, and search for a road to recovery.
When Fawcett came back from her stay in Europe last month, reports broke out around the clock that Fawcett’s anal cancer had put her in critical condition. At the same time, efforts were being made by the big networks to buy Farrah’s Story and air it in time for sweeps. Fears that Fawcett might still be critical, or already dead, by then were less of a concern.
Fawcett is still hanging around, and may have gotten to see NBC air Farrah’s Story at long last during last night. Farrah’s Story did not spare viewers the down side of living with cancer, as Fawcett was frequently seen during chemo, seen lying in bed, and seen ailing at the worst of it.
While Fawcett is filmed trying to keep her spirits up and find better treatment, her famous family also gets a share of screen time. Loved one Ryan O’Neal comforts his long-time lover, and exposes his own fear to the camera when she’s not looking.
Fawcett’s struggles and the controversy around the whole premise of Farrah’s Story made it one of the big, non scripted events of sweeps month. As usual, the debate over how exploitative and moral it is to air someone like this is only going to make the public watch it even more.
In addition, one of the original producers of Farrah’s Story got a lawsuit filed earlier in the week, alleging that O’Neal and two others took creative control of the project from him. Craig Nevius accused O’Neal of threatening him during the fight over the project.
Things weren’t made any better by Fawcett and O’Neal’s son, Redmond O’Neal, was arrested again for drug charges weeks ago. He needed permission to leave jail so that he could visit his ailing mother.
Fawcett’s family reportedly held an early screening of Farrah’s Story for friends and loved ones Wednesday night. Fawcett herself couldn’t attend, but O’Neal told the Associated Press that she would be able to watch the documentary at home last night.
