One of the most popular Playstation games is now a PSOne Classic title. Final Fantasy VII is now downloadable on the PSP and Playstation 3.
Released in 1997, Final Fantasy VII is actually just the fourth game in the series to be released in North America following Final Fantasy, Final Fantasy IV (first released as Final Fantasy II) and Final Fantasy VI (first released as Final Fantasy III). Instead of calling their next title Final Fantasy IV, developer Square Enix decided to keep the Japanese name of Final Fantasy VII. Eventually, they would also rectify the names of previous Final Fantasy games.
Final Fantasy VII was a departure from the series in more ways than one. Not only was it the first game to be done in 3D, the seventh game also became the first title to be released outside of a Nintendo video game system. As a result, Sony and the Playstation were able to overtake Nintendo and the Nintendo 64 in the console wars race.
Thanks to the power of the Playstation in addition to the advent of the CD format for extra storage space, Final Fantasy VII features astonishing graphics and audio when it came out. The high production values elevated the game to be one of the most popular titles ever. In fact, Final Fantasy VII led to the golden age of Japanese RPGs.
The Final Fantasy franchise also benefited greatly from the success of the seventh game. Due to its success, Square Enix would eventually release all previous Japan-only Final Fantasy game in North America. Furthermore, they also expanded the brand name to several spin-off titles. To date, Square Enix has released twelve mainline Final Fantasy games with at least two more in the pipeline.
However, no title has proven to be more successful than Final Fantasy VII. Square Enix couldn’t resist taking advantage of the game’s popularity and, as a result, built a compilation brand specifically for it. In addition to several video games, they also released a movie titled Final Fantasy VII Advent Children.
To celebrate the Blu-ray released of Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children Complete, Sony and Square Enix partnered up to re-release Final Fantasy VII as a downloadable game. At just $9.99 (a bargain considering that the retail copy is selling for around $50), you can play the original Playstation classic on the PSP and the Playstation 3.
Final Fantasy VII is easily the most high profile game on the PSOne Classic program to date. You can expect more Playstation games to come as Sony is planning to release 50 more PSOne Classics on the PSP and Playstation 3.
