Love going to other cities, states – even other countries? Many people do. People who travel tend to take pictures and save foreign items to show to others. People love to talk about other places they’ve seen and visited, but if you’d like to do something different to show off your travels, why not create a shirt you can wear? The shirt will tell others about your travels and vacations without you saying a word.
Fabric paints make it easy to create any theme for an ordinary t-shirt. The paints dispense from a small squeeze bottle and can be found at any craft store. They’re available in glitter, matte and even metallic types. Ink stamps are another way you can easily make the travel theme for your shirt. The stamps are available in zillions of images, including letters, numbers, road signs and more. Another option is a paint marker. The markers resemble magic markers but are filled with paint rather than ink. The designs made with the paint markers are permanent but can fade somewhat over time. Stencils with a travel theme can also help you create the destination design for the shirt. No matter what technique you use place newspaper, cardboard or plastic between the layers of the shirt to prevent the paint or ink from bleeding through to the other size.
You’ll decide how you want to show off your travels on the shirt. There are many different but easy designs you can create. One theme can be a simple list of the places you’ve been. Use the paints or stamps to make a list of large cities, foreign countries, or even theme parks that you’ve visited. Set them off with an icon or logo beside each one. The logo doesn’t have to be an official symbol of the place. It can be an image of a tree, a bus or even a stop sign.
Create a completely different look by writing the names of the places you’ve visited all over the shirt instead of in a list. When you run out of room on the front of the shirt start writing destinations on the backside. Write some of the places in large lettering, others in smaller letters. Write some of the destinations horizontally and others vertically. Use different colors of paints or do them all in gold paint. Make the images on an ordinary white tee or choose a colored tee with coordinating paint or ink designs. There are many options for creating the perfect travel shirt.
You don’t have to be an artist to create the travel shirts. Use ordinary lines to make roads or stencils to make shapes for road signs. The paint markers make it especially easy to write simple words or make ordinary shapes for the shirt. Or, use coloring book pages to make various images. Trace over a sun, a puppy or another image with the tube paints. Turn the paper over onto the shirt to transfer the image. Don’t press on the painted page or it could smear on the shirt. If the image doesn’t completely transfer just use the tube paints to fill in the missing areas. Coloring book pages have simplistic designs that are easy to duplicate.
Even if you’ve never been to any exotic locations you can still create a fun, interesting travel shirt. List cities you’ve been to within your own country. Or, list museums, statues and other landmarks you’ve visited. The shirts are especially fun for kids to create. They can use paint markers to write the destinations. The paint markers give them a no-mess option for having lots of fun.
Don’t do much traveling? Hope to one day? Make a travel shirt that displays the destinations you hope to see someday. Make matching shirts for your children or mate. The destinations don’t necessarily have to be foreign. They can be places in the States you’d love to visit or interesting landmarks in your region. There are no rules for making your own travel shirt.
If you don’t travel much, but have a friend or family member who does, the travel shirt is a great gift. Create one that shows some of the destinations you know they’ve visited. If there haven’t been that many destinations throw other words or phrases into the mix. Paint the words “Train”, “Plane”, “Car”, “Toll Booth”, and similar travel-related words onto the shirt. It’s a fun project that costs little to make but makes a huge statement to those who see it.
