Summer is a great time to find fun activities for your children. In Columbus, Georgia the goal of many parents is to get their kids out of the dullness of spending most of the day, every day, in the air conditioning at home.
If you are looking for activities to do on the spur of the moment, check out Port Columbus, the Coca-Cola Space Science Center, or the Columbus Museum.
The Columbus Museum is located at 1251 Wynnton Road (706-748-2562) and does not charge an admission. The museum is open from 10 am- 5 pm on Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday, and from 10 am to 9 pm on Thursdays. The Columbus Museum is closed on Mondays. The museum features frequently changing exhibitions as well as many educational programs for adults and children.
The Port Columbus Naval Museum is located at 1002 Victory Drive (706-327-9798) and is open every day from 9 am until 5 pm. The Naval Museum charges $6.50 for adults and $5.50 for students. Port Columbus features six ships, a timeline exhibit, as well as a unique Civil War flag exhibit.
The Coca-Cola Space Science Center is located 701 Front Avenue (706-649-1470) and is open Monday through Thursday from 10 am until 4 pm, 10 am until 8 pm on Fridays, and 10:30 am until 8 pm on Saturdays. Adults are charged $6 for admission and kids (ages 4-12) cost $4. The Space Science Center features flight simulators and other interactive displays in the lobby. The planetarium is a state of the art theater that uses video projection and sound to guide you through the universe. The Mead Observatory was established for astronomy outreach and uses portable telescopes to bring the skies to us humble beings here on Earth.
For a more substantial set of activities for your children for the summer, consider enrolling them in the Columbus State University camp program entitled Activ8. Activ8 is part of the Continuing Education department at Columbus State University. It is designed for kids from 4-14, with classes broken down into three age groups (4-7, 8-11, and 11-14). Activ8 is an absolutely amazing way for your child to spend their time during the weekdays through the months of June and July. The program has before and after program care available for working parents and a lunchtime meal is provided in the cost.
The schedule for the Activ8 program is selected by your child so that they will get the most out of the experience. Your children can choose a new class each week, with the weekly cost of the classes ranging from $80-$120. Program categories include sports and dance classes, hands-on science classes, technology classes, arts and crafts, as well as classes to give your children more awareness of how they fit into this great big world. Classes are held at Columbus State University and at the Elizabeth Bradley Turner Center from 9 am-noon for morning sessions and 1 pm-4 pm for the afternoon sessions. Sign up your children up soon because some classes fill up quickly. Call 706-507-8070 for more information.
