As we age, the body becomes more prone to health issues, which is why it is important to eat right, sleep well, exercise, and drink enough water for preventative health. These are the biggest health risks for women in their 40’s.
Part of getting older means that your metabolism will slow down. Naturally having the metabolism that you had in your twenties when you are forty is simply not realistic. At forty, your metabolism will generally run slower which means that you cannot eat the same things that you did when you were twenty years old. Boost your metabolism by getting enough exercise, including cardio and strength training. Building muscle will burn calories even while you are not exercising. Drink green tea to speed up your metabolism as well.
Cardio exercise will keep your heart rate up, and boost your metabolism. Cardio will be one half of your exercise plan to boost your metabolism back up where it should be. Cardio like playing tennis, swimming, walking/jogging, running, and rowing are all cardio exercises that will help you stay in shape.
Strength training is the other half of the plan to get your metabolism going. Lifting weights and using a stability ball with a workout routine designed for you about 3 or 4 days a week will boost your muscle content and help you get stronger. You would also benefit from accompanying strength training with cardio.
To lower your chances of heart disease, improve your diet to lower your cholesterol. Taking pills to lower high cholesterol isn’t the best way to prevent heart disease or other problems associated with high cholesterol. Improve your diet by eating low cholesterol foods and less saturated fat to lower your cholesterol and reduce your chances of heart disease.
Diabetes can become a risk factor for women who are aging. Changes in physical activity like getting cardio and strength training in your day, and changes in your diet, like eating low saturated fat and fiber rich foods, will help to prevent problems which could lead to diabetes.
Women should be able to give themselves an at home breast exam by the time they are twenty years old. However, your risk of breast cancer is far higher by the time you turn forty, and your risk increases as you get older. If you haven’t already started doing so, go to your doctor to get a yearly best exam and mammogram to have a professional scan for breast cancer.
All of those years in the sun could leave you at risk for skin cancer. If you haven’t been wearing enough sunscreen, make sure your block is at least SPF 35 or higher whenever you go into the sun. Cover all areas of your body in SPF, including wearing an SPF 35 on your face. Get an exam by a doctor for pre-existing moles and beauty marks on the skin. These marks, if not watched carefully, can morph and change size and shape without you noticing, and could be cancerous.
Women getting older face the challenge of getting enough calcium in their diets. Women over 40 may experience calcium depletion in their bones which can lead to osteoporosis. To prevent osteoporosis, get enough calcium in your diet by eating low fat milk products such as skim milk, low fat dairy, and fish such as salmon.
Just because a woman turns 40, does not mean that she is not still at risk for pregnancy. Many women do not expect to get pregnant at this age, and therefore do not take as much precaution. It is important to be as careful as ever even when you turn 40 because pregnancy can still happen.
