Stockpiling food is something that has been done for many years. Many choose to do this so that if they ever hit hard times, they will still have plenty of food to eat. If you are considering creating a food stockpile, I would recommend that you first determine where you are going to store your food. You will need something that is large enough to hold storage bins. Sine many live in apartments nowadays, it can be a challenge to even create a small stockpile of food.
When looking for a place to keep your stockpiled goods remember that you can purchase a few bins that can be easily placed under beds or under tables. I have found that investing the money in a few fireproof storage bins is a good idea. If you live in an apartment you are more at risk for a fire than living in a home. If you apartment does catch on fire you will not lose your money on the food that you have invested in. You can also use regular storage bins which are a lot more affordable.
Once you have all of your storage equipment you can start stockpiling. Make a list of canned good items that your family eats on a regular basis. You should also make a list of canned juices and rice that your family enjoys. These are all items that can be stored for several years. You can even stock up on paper products like toilet paper and paper towels. Don’t forget about foil and plastic wrap. When these items go on sale, (which they usually do at least once a year), you should buy as many as your budget will allow. Check to see the limit on each item. Usually they have a five item limit per person, per visit. After your visit, you can always return and get five more if your budget allows. You will end up getting much more for your money and you will have plenty of supplies if you ever need it. Once your surplus bins are filled your focus should be on keeping your cabinets stocked. You will be surprised at how quick your stock pile fills up.
One way to keep track of the expiration date of your items is to put items that expire around the same time in the same bins. Then write the operation date on the bin using tape. This way all you have to do is look at the top of the bin to see when you are getting close to the expiration date. As you approach the expiration date you will want to start using some of these items. As things go on sale you can did new items to your bin. Some have found it easier to keep a check list on the top of the bin so that they can track what is inside of the bin. Try coming up with your own storage methods and you will have a very nice stockpile in no time.
