You’ve written a new article. Perhaps you edited it from another site where it seemed to be doing very well. Suddenly, you have a nasty critical comment on your article. How do you deal with it?
You anxiously open your article or email and see you have new comments. Eager to read what others think you read on.
You are suddenly stunned to read that someone is dashing your article. Smashing it to bits before your very eyes. Perhaps they have even made some very inflammatory comments. Stunned you dwell on the comments that you have just read.
You are writing from your perspective. Remember, people are commenting from their perspective.
No, they don’t have the right to be rude or obnoxious, but many still are.
Do not engage in a “rebuttal” with negative comment makers. This will only fuel the comment maker on making it an even more volatile situation. Often the comment maker wants to have this cyber fight with someone. Do not let that someone be you.
If possible, go ahead and delete the comment. If it is not possible, you could add your own comment stating that the opinions stated in your article are by no means designed to be biased, you are simply writing from one perspective yet recognize that there are many perspectives.
You might even declare that you will eventually be writing from another perspective. Then leave it at that.
Recognize that not all of your articles are going to be liked by everyone. Perhaps your article literally hit home and someone felt guilty.
Perhaps the person is going through a difficult time and felt like you had singled them out. Whatever the case, it is not your fault.
Take this as an opportunity to fine tune your future articles. Read through your article after you have written it and ask yourself,
1. Could I have offended someone by writing this?
2. Could I re word anything that might sound offensive?
3. Have a friend read it and ask their perspective.
If your article is from a religious standpoint and someone disagrees. Respect that all of us have chosen to worship in our own way. Do not judge them, that is not a right you have, even if they are judging you. Let their judgment be their wrong, don’t stoop to their level.
Don’t take negative or critical comments personal and let it ruin your day. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. Apply the old adage, “one mans trash is another mans treasure”.
Do not become disheartened and stop writing. Think of all of the great comments you have on your other articles or perhaps even the article they made negative comments on. Let the majority rule here. Keep writing and don’t ever let a negative comment dissuade you.
