At my job I get a number of questions from young women wanting to know about the risk of pregnancy from different sexual activities as well as how to recognize pregnancy. Here are some frequently asked questions and their answers:
Could I get pregnant from having anal sex?
It is possible, though unlikely, to get pregnant from having anal sex. If the man is not wearing a condom and ejaculates inside the anus, there is a possibility of semen leaking from the anus. If this happens, sperm can enter the vagina. There is a risk of pregnancy, but it is a low risk. Using a condom or other birth control method will eliminate the possibility of pregnancy when engaging in anal sex.
Can I get pregnant if I am already pregnant?
No. Once a woman becomes pregnant, she stops ovulating (releasing eggs). When no eggs are released, pregnancy is not possible.
Can I have a period when I’m pregnant?
No. When a woman becomes pregnant she cannot have a period, as the blood and tissue that is expelled during the period is needed for the pregnancy. There are some women who experience bleeding in early pregnancy (implantation bleeding) that can be mistaken for a period. Implantation bleeding is normally lighter and shorter than a normal period.
Could I get pregnant if I have sex while on my period?
Yes. Most women ovulate about 7 days after their period ends, but there are women who ovulate while on a period. Anytime a woman is ovulating she has a chance of becoming pregnant.
I had sex last week and am nauseated, am I pregnant?
It is unlikely the nausea you are feeling now is a symptom of pregnancy. Most women don’t experience the symptoms of early pregnancy until week 6, which is a couple weeks after you miss your period.
Can I get pregnant through clothes (dry humping)?
It is nearly impossible to get pregnant this way. If you and your partner are wearing only underclothes and his semen gets your underwear wet, there is a very small chance of pregnancy. It’s technically possible, but extremely unlikely.
My pregnancy test was negative, could I be pregnant?
Most likely you are not pregnant if your home-test was negative, but if your period doesn’t start in the next few days you should take another test. Sometimes the pregnancy hormones are not yet strong enough to show up on the test on the first day of your missed period.
How do I know I’m pregnant?
The only way to truly know if you’re pregnant is to take a pregnancy test. If your period is late and you have had sex since your last period, take a home pregnancy test. A missed period is often the first sign of pregnancy.
How soon can I take a pregnancy test?
You can take a home pregnancy test on the first day of your missed period. If the test is negative and you don’t start your period, wait a week and try again.
Can a man get pregnant?
Absolutely not! This is a common question since the news reported a pregnant man in Oregon. The pregnant man in Oregon was born a woman and has female internal anatomy. He is a transsexual but his female internal organs are intact.
