Due to mounting financial strain brought on by a recession, the vast majority of Americans are looking for new ways to save money. The cost of commercial cleaning supplies is one component of our budgets that few of us consider when looking for ways to tighten our belts. This is because most people do not realize that we have other options.
Making your own cleaning supplies such as Tub and Tile cleaner is an easier process than most people realize. It saves money and helps you reduce the amount of toxins and chemicals you introduce into your home and into the environment. You’ll discover that you will often be charged more for commercial blends of cleaning products that are free of additives such as dyes and fragrances, so making your own cleaning supplies makes it easier to live green.
The following recipe for spray on Tub and Tile cleaner is simple to make. It calls for inexpensive ingredients you may already have on hand. It also does not require heating or any special tools to make the Tub and Tile cleaner. This recipe is customizable; I will include instructions for tweaking the Tub and Tile cleaner for tubs and showers that have a lot of soap scum.
You will need the following containers and implements to make the spray on Tub and Tile cleaner: a mixing bowl large enough to mix 4 cups of liquid in without any liquid sloshing out; a large plastic or wooden spoon; a spray bottle large enough to hold four cups of liquid.
You will also need the following ingredients to make the spray on Tub and Tile cleaner:
1 1/2 cups of white vinegar (only use white vinegar it works much better than apple cider or other flavored vinegars); 1 1/2 cups water; 3/4 cup of hydrogen peroxide (comes in a brown bottle you may already have some in your first aid kit). If you would like you can also add 40 to 50 drops of essential oil, for this recipe and oil that is naturally antiseptic such as lavender, orange, grapefruit or lemon will give the recipe added disinfecting power.
Begin making the recipe by combining all of the ingredients (except for the essential oil if you choose to use it) in the mixing bowl and mixing them thoroughly with the plastic or wooden spoon. After mixing the base ingredients you may add the essential oil, if you prefer, and mix the blend again.
Once all of the ingredients are thoroughly mixed simply pour your finished tub and tile cleaner into the spray bottle and replace the top. Your tub and tile cleaner is now ready for use. To use the completed tub and tile cleaner, simply spray it on your tub and the walls of your shower. Allow it to set for five to ten minutes depending on how dirty the surfaces are. Then scrub it off with a scrubby or washcloth.
If your tub or tile has a lot of soap scum you can add an extra 1/2 cups of vinegar to the recipe and allow the cleaner to set on soiled surfaces for an extra five minutes.
