Hearing a loved one or good friend has breast cancer can be a very scary time. You wonder how you can be there for them, not just emotionally but maybe financially as well. Knowing they are going to have to take time off of work, sometimes for a very long period of time, you know their bills are still going to be there. Having a fund-raiser is a great idea to help raise funds to help them pay their bills, their medicines they might have, or dr’s appointments. Here is a guide to throwing a breast cancer fund-raiser.
First of all, think about your target. Do you want to have a benefit dinner, do you want to sell donuts, a yard sale, do you want to have a bake sale? There are many different routes you can take. You can actually combine quite a few of these together to make one HUGE fund raiser and getting more money. We’ll talk about how to do this later!
Secondly, think about the up-front cost. Having a benefit yard sale might not be that much. You would just need to have a good location, some signs, and some price stickers, but some of the other ideas such as a benefit dinner or a bake sale you might have to have a significant amount up front for ingredients. It’s a good idea to ask more friends of your loved one to pitch in. It’s a good chance that they too are looking for ways to make it easier on them as well,so they will be more than willing to help. Price what you need at a local store and make sure and bring a list.
Pick a good time and date. If you’re going to do a yard sale or a car wash, you want to make sure that you have good weather. If it looks like it might rain, you might want to just stick with a benefit dinner in a place that is willing to let you host it in their building or residence. If you have good weather, try and do your yard sale or car wash on a Saturday. Attendance is always MUCH better on this day.
Next, advertise!!! Find places that are willing to let you post fliers, put an ad in the local paper etc. Getting the word out is important to making it a success. If by chance you want to do several different events to raise money here is a good plan. Have a yard sale and bake sale combined, while handing out fliers for a benefit dinner that will take place as well. Here is your way to combing things and making a big success out of it. If you have several people willing to help, this could make things easier and help you raise more money.
Get your supplies together. Take a good week before the planned event to get your things together and organized. This helps to cut down on confusion and if you forget something, it will be easier at the last minute to get it done.
One last tip, make sure people know what you are having the benefit for. You don’t have to get too personal with names etc, unless your loved one is comfortable with it. You can just post that it’s for a wonderful woman who recently found out she was diagnosed with breast cancer or if she gives you her permission, you could put a picture and write a small piece about them so everyone knows that it’s for an excellent cause. Unfortunately, many people know someone who was touched with breast cancer at one point in their lives, so they may be very sympathetic and eager to help someone else with this horrible disease.
