Ice cream is a tasty treat to have anytime, especially in the warm summer sun. Throwing your own ice cream social for a group of kids is a way to allow them to have fun, eat mouth watering snacks and spend time with their friends. An ice cream social can be just a small get-together on the weekend, or as a substitute for a birthday party or other special occasion.
Since an ice cream social can get pretty messy, it’s important to have the proper supplies for an easy clean up. Purchase disposable paper table clothes that can be simply thrown away or plastic ones that can be wiped. Always have plenty of napkins on hand for a quick clean up of messes and of course, for the messy children. You will need paper bowls and plastic spoons in order to eat the ice cream. Try to get some in a variety of colors to make the party more festive. If you plan on having other foods at the party, don’t forget the paper plates and plastic cups, forks and knives.
For an ice cream social, the traditional method is to line up the children and allow them to go down a line of tables to get their ice cream and toppings. Depending on how many children are attending the ice cream social party, you may need to line up about three of four tables, long ways, so that you are able to spread out the ice cream, bowls, spoons and toppings.
When choosing ice cream, get a variety of kinds in half gallon boxes. You do not want to purchase a large amount in one flavor incase it ends up getting wasted. Kids are not too picky when it comes to ice cream so just choose common flavors such as chocolate, strawberry and vanilla. The kids will then get their chance to spice up the ice cream with their toppings.
Toppings are one of the best parts of an ice cream social. There are so many kinds to pick and they all taste yummy together to make a delicious ice cream sundae. Purchase at least three cans of the spray on whip cream so that the kids can easily spray it on top of their ice cream. Next, get some syrup to go over the whip cream such as chocolate and strawberry syrups. You may even want to heat up some hot fudge and cameral for an alternative or addition to their sundaes. Finally, add some extra toppings such as nuts, m&m’s, cookie pieces, candy pieces, sprinkles and a cherry to top it off.
Parties are much more entertaining when they are decorated with bright and fun colors. Put up big colorful balloons, banners, streamers and center pieces to make your ice cream social that much better. Allow the kids to color pictures of ice cream cones before the party and hang them up around the party area. To finish the decorating off, create a big colorful sign that says, ‘Ice Cream Social!”.
