Not everyone likes the ides of selling their little ones baby clothes. There are many parents who want to hold on to the clothes and the memories attached to them. So why not make those old baby clothes into a nice memory filled quilt. Even if you are not good at sewing you can still make this fun project.
To get started you will want to make sure that you have enough clothing to at least get the quilt started. Lay all of the pieces that you have for the quilt flat on a bed or another flat surface. You will want to cut them so that you only have one piece of material. Fro example with shirts or t-shirts you will need to separate the front from the back. If the pajamas or the shirts have a special message on the front this is the one that you will want to keep. The back side of each of the items can still be used to fill in gaps, so just set them aside. You will need a sewing machine for this memory project.
Once you have all of the pieces separated you can start pinning the pieces together. Start first by pinning two pieces together. For example you can take the front and back of a shirt and pin one side of the shirt together. Then go to your sewing machine and sew these two pieces together. Once they are secure you will want to take the opposite side of one of the items and pin another piece of baby clothing to it. Then sew this piece. Keep going across until you have it as wide as you would want the blanket to be. When you have reached the desired width you can start sewing down. You will want to pin the next clothing item to the bottom of one of the top pieces. Always start from one end and work your way across to the opposite end. This may not be the traditional way to make a blanket or a quilt but it is a simple way that I came up with and when it is all done you will have a beautiful memory blanket.
Once you have finished sewing together all the pieces of clothing that you have you can make the blanket a bit thicker by sewing a piece of soft cotton material on the back. You can visit your local fabric supply shop to find the material you want. Then pin together the corners of the blanket you created to the piece of fabric. Be sure that you are pinning it so that the front of the blanket you created is on top. You want to be able to see all of those funny messages. Then you can sew together three of the sides of the blankets, using a double stitch so that it does not come apart. Leave one since of the blanket open. Flatten the blanket and pull it tightly when you pin the last side. Then sew up the last side an you have a perfect memory blanket made from your child’s old clothing. This is definitely something that you can keep for years, and the best part is that tit is easy to make.
