We all have our guilty TV secrets. One of my guilty TV secrets is the show Ice Road Truckers on the History Channel. Basically, Ice Road Truckers is a show about semi-truck drivers that drive on a stretch of ice in Alaska taking truck loads of supplies to the various mining companies in Alaska.
What is special about the ice road is that it’s only around for a small part of the year. The ice road melts. The Ice Road Truckers must make all their deliveries before the ice melts.
Ice Road Truckers is not boring by any means. There are several great characters in Ice Road Truckers. Some of the characters will make you laugh, while others will frustrate the fire out of you. I will share with you a brief overview of the characters in season 1 of Ice Road Truckers.
Alex is the son of a Polish Immigrant. He’s a devout Catholic and has 11 children. On his spare time, he’s a prison minister. Alex has great wit and humor, and his jokes will keep you laughing while you watch Ice Road Truckers.
In Season 1, Drew is a trucker who is making his debut on the ice road. He has been a successful trucker for many years. This is his first try on the ice road. Will Drew make it to season 2 of the Ice Road Truckers? I guess if you haven’t watched season 1 already, you will have to to find out!
Hugh is a very competitive ice road trucker. He owns four trucks, and drives one himself. The other three trucks he owns are driven by three other people. Hugh makes it his mission to get the most loads through the ice road in any given year. He’s an ice road trucker through and through. He’s also sarcastic. If you like sarcastic humor, Hugh will grow on you.
Hugh is also a family man. He’s married with three children.
I really admire Jay. Jay is the youngest ice road trucker. He’s also very talented and can maneuver down the ice road a lot better than I thought he would. He’s rather thin, and the first time I saw him on season 1 of the Ice Road Truckers, I wasn’t sure that he would make it. However, he’s very driven and is a good ice road trucker.
On the off season, Jay operates a mining shovel at Diavik.
Rick is a loud-mouthed ice road trucker. Season 1 of the Ice Road Truckers was Rick’s second year as an ice road trucker. Ray drives a truck on the ice road for Hugh. His goal this year is to beat Hugh and get more loads through the ice road. The rivalry between Hugh and Rick is tense, and is one of the points of the show that grab your attention and keep you watching.
Season 1 of the Ice Road Truckers is the first year that TJ has driven on the ice road. Instead of being appreciative and learning from the veteran ice road truckers, TJ has an attitude that clashes with many of the other ice road truckers. TJ hates the cold, isn’t there for the money – and so it’s confusing to see why he’s an ice road trucker. TJ contends that he’s driving on the ice road for the experience.
I’ve given you a brief overview of the main characters on season 1 of the Ice Road Truckers. If you like reality shows that have a little meat to them and show you new ways of life, Ice Road Truckers is a great show for you. My favorite Ice Road Truckers characters are Jay and Rick. I like Rick because he’s mischievous and always gets under Hugh’s skin.
