The State of Rajasthan in India is full of the historical monuments of the famous Rajput Kingdom. The cities of Udaipur, Jaipur, Chitodgarh, Jodhpur, and Jesalmer are full of such historical monuments. Thousands of visitors, who are interested in the history of Rajputs, like to visit such monuments. I am one of them and really love to visit such vital monuments. The famous temple of Eklingji is one such monument that tells us the life story of the bravery of the famous Rajput King Rana Pratap. We were able to visit this ancient Lord Shiva temple of Eklingji during our recent visit to India.
This temple of lord Eklingji is situated at around 360 miles away from the city of Surat and only 15 miles away from the city of Udaipur. There are regular State Transport buses available from all the major cities of both the Gujarat and Rajasthan State. The taxis and hired cars also can be easily taken from the city of Udaipur for this trip to Eklingji temple and the Jain temples at Kankroli and Ranakpur. We haired a car at lump sum rate of Rs.1600 ($32) for the full day. We started at around 9 am from the city of Udaipur and reached this famous temple at around 10 am in the morning. The Eklingji Mahadev is considered the Kuldevta of the Sisodia Rajputs, belonging to the Mewad region. This temple is really fabulous and shows all the glory of the ancient Rajput Kingdom in its original way. The temple has a statue of Lord Shiva, having five mouths. There is no such other temple in the world having the Lord Shiva Lingam with five faces. There are four faces on each side and one face is on the top. The Lord Shiva Lingam is black in color and is really very impressive. There are two Nandis stationed opposite to the Lord Shiva Lingam. These two Nandis are said to protect the Lord Shiva Lingam from all the evil elements of the world. The horns of the larger Nandi are decorated with the solid gold sheet and his remaining body is decorated with the silver sheets. The second Nandi is decorated with the brass sheets and looks as if it is made of solid gold. The puja of Lord Shiva is done here at this temple with rare diamonds on some of the auspicious days like Mahashivratri. There is a large Lake near this temple of Eklingji Mahadev. This Lake is known as Indrasagar Lake. There are ancient temples of Lord Ganesh, Laxmidevi temple, and the Bhairavnath temple at the shore of the lake. The back of the main temple of Eklingji Mahadev is engraved with the statues of human beings in various sexual positions. This engraving is really unique and the tourists visit this temple to see such sculptures from all over the world. The morning and evening artis are really worth attending as it creates a very holy and spiritual environment inside the temple.
The history says that the famous Rajput King Maharana Pratap was coming here regularly to pray at this temple of Eklingji Mahadev. He was the staunch follower of this Eklingji Mahadev. He had declared the war against the Mogul King Akbar from this temple. That is why this temple has a very large historical importance in Indian history. Most of the visitors visiting city of Udaipur make sure to visit this historical Eklingji temple to cherish the memories of brave Rajput kingdom of fourteenth century. There is one dharmashala just at the outside of the temple for the tourists for the overnight stay. The reasonably clean rooms are available at this dharmshala at the nominal rates of around Rs.50 ($1) per day. There are few restaurants available near the temple, which serve traditional Rajasthani food delicacies. The tourists must carry their own supply of drinking water as the drinking water available here at Eklingji temple contains some dissolved salts and is not potable. It is suggested to visit this temple during the winter months from November to March as the summer months are extremely severe in this region of Rajasthan State.
I would strongly recommend all my AC friends and readers to visit to this ancient and historical temple of Eklingji Mahadev during their next trip to India.
