The entire region of Saurashtra in the Gujarat State is full of places of pilgrimage, site seeing places and the beautiful sea beaches. We were lucky to visit the city of Veraval during last January during our visit to India. The famous Somnath temple is situated here at Veraval. Over and above the famous Somnath temple, there are many other holy and religious places near the city of Veraval. One such place is Bhalka Tirth. This tirth is extremely important for all the Hindus as this is the place where Lord Krishna had died.
Veraval is well connected by train, bus, and the air from the all the major cities of Gujarat State. We had preferred to travel by train, called as Somnath mail, which is leaving Ahmedabad at 9 pm in the evening and reaches Veraval at around 8 am in the next morning. There are few guest houses and hotels available here at the city of Veraval for the visitors. There is also a Somnath trust guest house available here for the tourists. The management of this guest house is done by the Somnath Trust. There are around 300 rooms in all at this guest house and most of the tourists prefer to stay here due to its prime location of just opposite to the famous Somnath temple. We stayed at this trust guest house in an air conditioned double room, which was available at the rate of around Rs.500 ($10) per day. As we had a hired car available with us, we went to visit the Bhalka Tirth in it. Otherwise there are auto rickshaws available in ample to visit such site seeing trip near by. The Bhalka Tirth is only around one mile away from this trust guest house. There is one large Pipal tree here at this tirth. This Pipal tree is called the Moksh Pipal. This is the tree under which Lord Krishna had left his mortal body. When he was sitting under this tree with one leg over the other, one hunter thought that it is a deer standing and he shoot the arrow aiming at the feet of Lord Krishna. The arrow stuck in the toe of his leg and he died instantly. The statue of Lord Krishna, made of blue marble is kept below the tree in the memory of sad demise of Lord Krishna. There is an ancient temple of Lord Krishna here at this tirtha. The statue of Lord Krishna is with Goddess Radha at this temple. There is also a temple of Hinglaj Mata nearby. The local people around this area have lot of faith in this temple and they keep on visiting this temple. The place, where the body of Lord Krishna was cremated, is known as the Dehotsarg place. This holy place is situated at the famous Triveni Sangam of the three Rivers namely, Hiranya, Kapila, and Sarswati. This triveni sangam is considered extremely holy as per Hindu religion and that is why it is one of the most vital places of pilgrimage for the Hindus. There is also a sit of Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabhu here near the triveni sangam. The Vaishnavs having faith in Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabhu visit this holy seat.
It may take around three to four hours to view all these places and the tourists can be safely back to their hotel at Veraval within around four hours maximum. There are no good restaurants available here near the Bhalka Tirth but some few small restaurants, which serve conventional Kathiawadi food items, are available here. However, it is suggested to carry the mineral drinking water with you as the quality of drinking water may not be that good here. The stay of around two days can be sufficient here at Veraval to cover most of the important site seeing places. It would also be better to visit Veraval during the winter season as the summer months are extremely hot here.
We shall never be able to forget our visit to this holy city of Veraval and wish that we will be able to visit it again in our life.
