The complete Mountain range of the Himalaya is full of most beautiful places and the holy temples of pilgrimage, mainly for Hindus. I had an opportunity once to visit this Himalaya Mountain area in my life before around six years. I took that opportunity to visit some of the rare, beautiful spots of this area, which are not visited by the common tourists. One such spot is Ukhi Math, which is situated in this region.
Ukhi Math is situated at around 18 miles away from famous Gauri Kund on the way to the famous temple of Lord Shiva at Kedarnath. The tourists can reach Ukhi Math by hired taxi or the Kashmir State Transport buses from Devprayag and Rudraprayag. The tourists can also reach Ukhi Math directly from Rishikesh by hired car or taxi. The rates for such four sitter taxi are around Rs.2000 ($40) per day for 250 kilometers. The additional kilometers are charged extra at the rate of Rs.5 (ten cents) per kilometer. It is a belief in Hindu religion that Lord Shiva had stayed here at Ukhi Math for performing tap. The famous Lord Aniruddha and goddess Usha also had stayed at this Ukhi Math for six years. There is an ancient temple of Omkareshwar Mahadev here. This temple is around 2000 years old and is having one of the largest Lord Shiva Lingams. The top of the Lord Shiva Lingam is covered with the solid gold mukut having five faces. The importance of visiting this temple is considered equal to the visiting famous temple of Lord Kedarnath. The Ravalji family of the priests, who are the royal priests of lord Kedarnath temple, are also the official priests at this temple. The Nandi at this temple is made of white marble and is really very big to the size of around six feet high and eight feet long. The lord Shiva Lingam is completely hidden behind this Nanadi so that the pilgrims are not able to see the Lord Shiva Lingam from outside the temple. The Lord Shiva Lingam of Kedarnath temple cannot be reached during the months from November to May due to very heavy snow fall. That is why the Lord Shiva lingam of Kedarnath temple is kept here at this temple of Ukhi Math for the public view during these winter months. The Omkareshwar temple at Ukhi math is around 250 feet tall and is having three domes. The main dome is for Lord Shiva. The next smaller dome is of Sati Parvati and the smallest dome is considered to be of Lord Ganesh. The temple and its surrounding area is full of natural beauty due to the fantastic view of Himalaya Mountain peaks all around it.
Many tourists come here at Ukhi Math to relax in the spiritual and peaceful atmosphere of Himalayas. There are no good hotels or restaurants available here at Ukhi Math. Only two small dharmashalas are available for the stay of visitors. These dharmashalas do not have any luxuries of the city life. Even, hot water is also not available in your room sometimes. The toilet facility is also common between five to six rooms and is located around 200 feet away from the dharmashala building. There are no good restaurants here at Ukhi math for food etc. There is only one small mobile restaurant available that serves only few hot beverages like tea, coffee, and milk. If you want to have meals here, you will have to request the priest of the temple to please cook your meal along with their lunch. We did just that and were able to enjoy the most lavish meal in its most basic and raw form. The meal was only consisting of Rotlas and one very spicy vegetable of potatoes. However, the sweetness of that meal is still stored in our mouth even today after around six years. There is also a shortage of drinking water here at Ukhi Math and the drinking water is to be taken out from a deep well with the help of a rope and bucket. In spite of all these limitations, I would still visit Ukhi Math again if the suitable opportunity comes in my life.
As I had enjoyed my visit to this rare spot of Ukhi Math, I suggest all my friends and readers to visit it in spite of many inconveniences as enlisted above. I am sure that all the visitors will love the virgin beauty of Ukhi Math if they are adventure and natural beauty lovers and are ready to forego some of the modern facilities..
