500 Festival Memorial Service
On May 22, 2009 there is a 500 Festival Memorial Service at 12pm at the north steps of the Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Monument in the downtown Indy area.
If you live in Indy then you should already know about this huge event, but just in case you don’t this is definitely a place to go. This is a free event that you are able to attend and honor our fallen soldiers. This is an amazing ceremony to watch because there are so many people that are affected by this and even if you aren’t personally affected you are able to share in others moments to remember their loved ones.
Crown Hill Cemetery
On Monday May 25, 2009 there are 4 separate events being held:
11:15am Sons of Union Veterans of the CW Memorial Day Ceremony
12:30pm Civil War Memorial Service- Join re-enactors to honor the many CW veterans buried here
1:30pm 140th Annual Memorial Day Ceremony- Honoring the Courage of Heroes
3:00pm Public Tour:Veterans-Brave Stories of sacrifice
This is a place that many locals attend because there is such a history that allows you to honor heroes. Crown Hill Cemetery is located at 700 W. 38th Street and it is free to attend so you can take part in any event that is offered during this weekend. Each event has information detailing what exactly it involves so check out the website and see what interests you most if not all at http://crownhillhf.org/calendar.html.
The Congressional Medal of Honor Memorial
This is another event that is free to everyone and you are able to attend any day of the year, but during the Memorial Day weekend it becomes very popular and crowded. This memorial is 27 glass walls that represent different conflicts that our heroes have encountered while paying tribute to 3,459 Medal of Honor recipients. What’s really special about this place is that every day at dusk the sound system attached to the memorial plays recorded stories of medal winners and their brave fight. It is located on the north side of downtown Indy’s Central Canal in White River State Park.
Law Enforcement and Firefighters Memorial
A local memorial tribute that is also very popular is the Law Enforcement and Firefighters Memorial which is located on the west side of the Indiana Statehouse. This memorial is a tribute to the local police and firefighters who have lost their lives in the line of duty. This a free park to attend with statues inscribed with over 600 fallen Hoosier heroes.
These are all free events because I feel at this time we may not all have a lot of money, but we should still be able to pay tribute to our fallen heroes and nothing, not even money should stop us. Not only can you attend these places all year round, but on Memorial Day weekend some even have special events that you can take part in to really try and grasp what our heroes have done for us so please take part and attend an event and honor those you have never met, but defended you.
