Infamous will be released on May 26th. It is the latest blockbuster exclusive game on the Playstation 3 following Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, LittleBigPlanet and Killzone 2. Of the previous titles, only Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots had a big boost on the sales of Playstation 3 hardware. While Infamous will sell great, there is doubt as to whether or not it is a system seller for the Playstation 3. Let’s take a look at several determining factors.
Too Similar to Other Games
One of the main hurdles for Infamous to become a system seller for the Playstation 3 is that it is too similar to other games. The exclusive title is a mixture of a platforming game like Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction in an open world environment akin to Crackdown. Not to mention that an eerily similar game, Prototype, is also coming out at the same time. Since it might not be the most original video game, Infamous won’t be able to distinguish itself enough for it to sell Playstation 3 systems.
Although it may not be the most innovative title, Infamous is still an excellent game. The Playstation 3 exclusive has received nothing but praise since it was fully revealed last year. The recently released demo also drew acclaim from prospective buyers who were previously on the fence. While quality doesn’t always mean that the game will sell well, Infamous is going to rake in some nice numbers due to good word of mouth.
Lack of Multiplayer
Although it isn’t a detriment to the quality, Infamous doesn’t have any multiplayer modes. This is crucial for its bid to become a system seller because game with multiplayer usually outsells single-player only titles. Not only does multiplayer increases sales, it also prevents rentals and used copies.
Because Infamous is a new intellectual property, it needs a strong advertising campaign in order for it to become a system seller. Unfortunately, this is where Sony, the publisher of the game in addition to the company behind the Playstation 3, has struggled in recent years. Unless Sony steps up their advertisement methods for Infamous, the game may only end up catering to the hardcore audience only.
Finally, Infamous will have a hard time selling Playstation 3 hardware even if it had everything going for it. This is because the high-definition video game system has an expensive price tag of $399.99. Given the current state of the economy, Infamous will most likely end up having minimal impact on the sales of Playstation 3 hardware unless Sony decides to drop the price of their system when the game launched.
