John Wall and Kentucky basketball are now coming together, according to sources. The Kentucky basketball program has been on hard times lately, but John Wall may help them out, if only for one year. John Wall was sought after by nearly every college there was, though it seems Kentucky won out. As such, Kentucky basketball is already seeing dividends over bringing John Calipari in as coach.
John Wall was the top ranked high school recruit in the nation, as the star point guard for the Word of God Christian Academy. Duke, Florida and Miami were listed as possible contenders for Wall, though many expected Wall would to Memphis – at least before Calipari left Memphis.
When John Calipari went to Kentucky basketball, everyone expected that the recruits he attracted to Memphis would go with him. Calipari’s ability to recruit made him even more attractive to Kentucky, which hasn’t been a national power in some time.
If reports are true and John Wall is coming to Lexington, it will help put the Wildcats back in the spotlight even further. Comparisons to the likes of Derrick Rose and Carmelo Anthony have been constant for Wall.
With Wall, the Wildcats cement what is likely to be named the top recruiting class in the country, all thanks to Calipari. In addition, the Wildcats’ star from last season, Jodie Meeks, is expected to withdrawn his name from the NBA draft pool and come back, particularly with Wall coming on.
In past years, Wall would not be coming to college, most likely. In fact, since Wall has been in high school for five years, some wondered if he could find a loophole to jump to the NBA. But since David Stern helped make sure that players couldn’t go from high school to the NBA anymore, it lets future stars like Wall get one year in college first. And one year is usually all they stay for.
Calipari may already be a difference maker for Kentucky basketball, but even he can’t likely change that fact. Which means hopes that were ridiculously high already for the Wildcats are even higher, with all the tools Calipari has for himself in 2009-10.
Even failed coach Billy Gillispie may not have had this much of a bullseye on his back – albeit for different reasons than coach Cal.
